In The Parallax View, Žižek introduces "Multitude" as Hardt and Negri's biopolitical category for the emergent revolutionary subject that supposedly crystallizes immanently within global capitalism itself. The Multitude names the networked, cooperative, immaterial laborers whose collective productive power — generated inside and against Empire — is said to render traditional political mediation (the state, the party, the vanguard) obsolete. On Hardt and Negri's account, the biopolitical surplus of the Multitude's creativity already exceeds capital's capacity to contain it, so that democracy becomes not a goal to be fought for but an immanent possibility that capitalism's own development has — paradoxically — made available "for the first time."

Žižek's theoretical move is to expose this claim as the reproduction, at the level of radical theory, of capitalism's own constitutive fantasy. By focusing exclusively on the creative content of biopolitical production and ignoring the dialectical function of capitalist Form — the specific social form through which surplus-value is extracted, relations of production organized, and the commodity-structure reproduced — Hardt and Negri dissolve the very antagonism that makes revolutionary rupture necessary and thinkable. The Multitude, in other words, cannot generate a genuine break (in the sense of a Badiouian Event that irrupts from the void of the situation) because it refuses to reckon with the formative contradiction that structures the situation in the first place. What looks like a theory of emancipation is, structurally, the ultimate capitalist fantasy: frictionless, self-revolutionizing production without remainder, without deadlock, without the real.
