Miscognition
ELI5
Miscognition is the name for the layer of our mental life where we're always almost getting at the truth but end up organised around meaning instead — like someone who keeps asking the right questions but always gets answers that feel satisfying without actually being true.
Definition
Miscognition, as it appears in Seminar XIII, names the structural plane on which meaning-processes are organised prior to — and in spite of — any arrival at truth. The term should be read against the Lacanian distinction between connaissance (imaginary recognition/knowing) and savoir (symbolic knowledge): miscognition does not simply mean "error" or "false belief" but rather designates the constitutive mis-alignment built into the very approach of signifying processes toward sense. On this plane, the subject is organised by the movement of meaning — the processes by which signifiers cohere into significance — but this organisation itself operates under a structural veil. The objet petit a, repositioned in the passage as the index of truth and pathway of inscription (the letter), is precisely what the miscognitive plane cannot accommodate: truth "falls out" of meaning-production and is replaced by Knowledge (savoir), which arises in place of truth after the loss of the object.
The plane of miscognition is therefore the regime of Demand and signification insofar as they are adequate to the circulation of meaning but inadequate to truth. It marks the zone where the subject's approach toward truth — channelled through Demand and the letter — becomes organised instead around available, repeatable sense; where Vorstellungsrepräsentanz, affect, and the different Freudian modes of representation remain unresolved, hovering in a field that is neither fully transparent to the subject nor fully opaque. Miscognition is thus the "address" of this unresolved organisation: the subject is not simply ignorant but is actively structured in its approach to meaning through a plane that displaces truth.
Place in the corpus
This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-13-1 (p. 31) at a pivotal moment in Lacan's argument about the objet petit a, the letter, and Demand. It sits at the intersection of several canonical concepts: the plane of miscognition is the structural field that Demand inhabits insofar as Demand articulates need through the signifier but can never close the gap between meaning and truth. Where Knowledge (savoir) arises "in place of truth" after the loss of the object, miscognition names the regime in which that substitution is organised — the subject is shaped by meaning-processes without recognising that these processes deflect rather than arrive at truth. It is closely related to the Letter, which is the material pathway of inscription that traverses this plane without being reducible to it: the letter, as the objet petit a's mode of inscription, passes through the miscognitive field toward truth, while the signifying processes of meaning remain caught on the plane of miscognition.
As an extension of the canonical concept of Objet petit a, miscognition specifies the imaginary-symbolic terrain from which the a is systematically excluded: the processes of meaning are organised on this plane precisely because they cannot accommodate the non-speculariable remainder that is a. As an extension of the Demand/Knowledge nexus, miscognition identifies the structural consequence of Demand's passage through signification — a plane that is formally distinct from truth and from which the subject cannot simply step away by an act of will. The concept thus functions as a topological marker within Seminar XIII's broader argument: it names where the subject lives, between the channel of Demand and the elusive register of truth that knowledge perpetually displaces.

referring back to the plane of miscognition where they are organised in the approach of the processes of meaning
The phrase "plane of miscognition" is theoretically loaded because it spatialises the structural gap between meaning and truth — not as a correctable error but as an organised field ("where they are organised") in which the very "approach of the processes of meaning" constitutes the deflection. The word "approach" is decisive: it implies movement toward something (truth) that is never reached, and this perpetual approach-without-arrival is what the plane of miscognition names.

Theoretical move: The passage repositions the objet petit a from a mere support of the partial object to the index of truth and pathway of inscription (the letter), arguing that the channel of Demand structures the itinerary toward truth, while Knowledge arises in place of truth after the loss of the object — and raises outstanding questions about the Vorstellungsrepräsentanz, affect, and Freudian types of representation that Lacan has not fully resolved.
