Metatongue

Metatongue is a coinage from Seminar 24 that names a specific operation performed on and within lalangue: the act of translating a theoretical term across languages not to preserve or transmit meaning, but to open a gap in sense — to produce an equivocation that operates on the Real rather than the Imaginary register of comprehension. Lacan introduces it through the performative example of translating "Unbewusst" (the Freudian unconscious) as "une-bévue" (a slip, a blunder) — a homophonic rendering that does not communicate an equivalent concept but instead demonstrates how the material accident of a particular tongue can activate the non-semantic, jouissance-laden stratum of lalangue. Metatongue is thus not metalanguage: where metalanguage would stand above language and adjudicate its propositions from outside, metatongue works from within the body of the tongue itself, exploiting equivocation, homophony, and material resonance to bore through meaning toward the Real. It is a practice rather than a position, a doing rather than a knowing.

The operation is theoretically inseparable from Lacan's sustained insistence that there is no metalanguage. If metalanguage is the impossible dream of a language that speaks the truth of language from a neutral vantage point, metatongue is its antithesis and practical refusal: a translation that does not mean but enacts, that does not clarify but produces a hole. In this sense metatongue is aligned with the poetic and the analytic function — both of which operate through equivocation and the letter rather than through suggestion and sense. The "une-bévue" rendition of "Unbewusst" is not a mistake in translation; it is a demonstration that the unconscious is itself a kind of blunder, a stumble inscribed in the materiality of the tongue, and that to reach it one must operate with the same accidental, jouissance-bearing matter of which it is made.

Metatongue appears once in jacques-lacan-seminar-24 (p. 125) and belongs to Lacan's late Borromean period, where the structuralist account of the unconscious as "structured like a language" has been substantially reworked. Its most immediate anchor is lalangue: metatongue is, in effect, the active, directed deployment of lalangue's equivocal-homophonic resources for a theoretical-analytic purpose. Where lalangue names the passive, pre-theoretical substratum of jouissance that the speaking being inherits by inhabiting a particular tongue, metatongue names the deliberate — though non-conceptual — act of working with that substratum. The translation of "Unbewusst" into "une-bévue" is thus not an application of linguistic knowledge (which would be metalanguage) but an exploitation of lalangue: it works because French and German phonemic material happen to rhyme with one another in a way that re-describes the unconscious as blunder.

Metatongue equally defines itself against language and metalanguage as Lacan theorizes them. Lacan's axiom that "there is no metalanguage" forecloses any position outside language from which language could be mastered or exhausted; metatongue accepts that prohibition and operates as an immanent alternative — a move that stays inside the materiality of the tongue precisely to do what metalanguage cannot. Its relation to the Gap is also decisive: the "une-bévue" translation does not cover over the gap in the Symbolic but performs it — the mis-translation is itself a béance, a stumble that shows the unconscious to be a structural slip rather than a hidden depth. Metatongue is thus positioned in Seminar 24 as the practical correlate of Lacan's rejection of suggestion and of any communicative or hermeneutic model of psychoanalysis: it is an operation on the letter, aimed at the Real, that bypasses sense entirely.

The phrase "risked operating in the sense of a metatongue" is theoretically loaded because it positions the concept as a practice undertaken under risk — not a settled method or meta-position but an experimental intervention — while the specific example of translating "Unbewusst" by "une-bévue" enacts the very hole-in-sense the concept describes, making the formulation simultaneously a definition and a demonstration of its own terms.
