Materialist Example

The "Materialist Example" designates Žižek's distinction between two fundamentally different ways of deploying examples in philosophical argument. In the idealist use, an example is merely illustrative — a particular case subordinated to and confirming the universal concept it is meant to demonstrate. The materialist use, by contrast, treats the example as a site of genuine theoretical pressure: the particular always risks undermining the very universal it is supposed to exhibit, because it gives body to what the concept must repress or cannot accommodate. The example, in this materialist reading, is not an innocent illustration but a symptomatic disclosure — it reveals the antagonism internal to the concept itself.

This is grounded in Žižek's account of "concrete universality" in the Hegelian move from the logic of Essence to the logic of the Notion. The "I"/Subject, as the original Notion, contains universality, particularity, and individuality as internally co-implicated moments rather than as externally related species. When a particular species generates a subspecies that undermines and surpasses it (documentary→fiction, Western→space opera, State→Church), this is not a failure of classification but the dialectical self-movement of the concept. The materialist example enacts precisely this: by pressing on the concept, the example exposes the repressed content that the concept cannot digest, thereby becoming the engine of conceptual transformation rather than a mere pedagogical ornament.
