When capitalism takes all kinds of knowledge — science, skills, information — and turns them into things that can be bought and sold on one big market, it accidentally reveals that every system of knowledge involves giving something up, and that "something" works exactly like profit: it's always extracted but never fully enjoyed by anyone.
Definition
Marketisation of Knowledge names the process by which the capitalist order unifies the field of knowledge (savoir) under a single discursive logic — reducing heterogeneous knowledges to commensurate, exchangeable commodities — and thereby renders visible the structural homology between surplus-jouissance and Marx's surplus value. Lacan's argument in Seminar XVI is that this operation is not merely economic but discursive and libidinal: it is only once knowledge is drawn into a single market — quantified, compared, traded — that the renunciation of jouissance built into every discourse can be read as a surplus, a remainder of enjoyment extracted and accumulated just as capital extracts and accumulates surplus value. The "unification" of science is therefore not a triumph of neutral rationality but the condition under which the conflictual truth of capitalist discourse — that it is organised around a structural loss and a non-recoverable remainder — first becomes legible.
This concept functions as the epistemic-economic hinge in Lacan's theory of the Four Discourses: it is the moment at which the Discourse of the Master's structural product (surplus-jouissance, objet petit a) acquires its specifically capitalist form. By subjecting knowledge to market logic, capitalism does not simply commodify information; it installs S2 (knowledge) as a universally fungible resource, concealing the S1 (the master signifier, and ultimately the divided subject as hidden truth) beneath the apparent neutrality of scientific-commercial exchange. The marketisation of knowledge is thus simultaneously an ideological operation — it naturalises the reduction of savoir to use-value and exchange-value — and the very condition that exposes the capitalist discourse as a problem of jouissance and truth rather than of political economy alone.
