Mark of Falsity

ELI5

When a pervert acts out their scenario, they aren't simply lost in it — they always keep one spot in the act where they know, and want it known, that the whole thing is fake. That self-aware stamp of "this is a put-on" is actually what makes it work for them.

Definition

The "Mark of Falsity" (la marque de faux) is Lacan's designation—via Jean Genêt—for the structural signature that the pervert deliberately inscribes into the perverse act. It names the moment within the perverse scenario in which the pervert does not simply enact a transgression but actively seeks to brand or stamp that act with the sign of its own inauthenticity, its counterfeit quality. The pervert, far from being naïvely caught in a delusional belief in the reality of the scene, wants a specific place within the act to bear the mark that it is false—a staged, constructed, artificial event. The mark is thus not incidental but constitutive: the awareness of falsity, rather than cancelling enjoyment, is precisely what sustains and intensifies the jouissance extracted from the perverse scenario.

This formulation is theoretically significant because it distinguishes perversion from simple transgression or naïve enactment. The pervert does not believe in the scene as a neurotic might half-believe in a fantasy; rather, the pervert engineers the scene while simultaneously maintaining, in a reserved "place," the knowledge of its fabricated status. This preserved brand of falsity functions structurally in relation to castration: just as the (-φ), the minus-phi, designates the evanescence or absence of the phallic function at the very site where it is supposed to operate, the mark of falsity is the place within the act where the real of castration is both acknowledged and circumvented—held at bay through a kind of controlled disclosure. The perverse act thus does not deny castration but attempts to master it by marking its own lack of truth, making the cut visible and thereby domesticating it.

Place in the corpus

The Mark of Falsity appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-13 (p. 274) at a pivotal recapitulatory moment in the seminar, where Lacan is drawing together the year's theoretical achievements: the gaze as privileged objet petit a functioning as (-φ), and the Oedipus Complex rethought via the Möbius strip. It is therefore embedded in a cluster of canonical concepts. Its most immediate anchor is Perversion and Castration: perversion in the Lacanian frame is classically defined as the structure in which the subject does not repress the knowledge of castration but disavows it (Verleugnung)—simultaneously knowing and not knowing. The Mark of Falsity specifies this disavowal with greater precision: the pervert does not simply "not know" but actively reserves a place within the act where the falsity, and thus the absence of the phallus (-φ), is branded. This relates the concept directly to the functioning of Castration as the symbolic operation that reveals the imaginary phallus as lacking.

The concept also sits in meaningful proximity to the Gaze as objet petit a. The gaze, as the object that the subject never directly apprehends but that organizes the scopic field, is itself a kind of mark—a stain, a blind spot that inculpates the subject. The Mark of Falsity can be read as the pervert's attempt to locate and control precisely such a stain within their own staged scene: by branding the act with falsity, the pervert tries to pin down and master what would otherwise function as the unpredictable remainder of the Real (the gaze, the objet a). Finally, the Möbius strip is relevant as the topological model within which the Oedipus Complex requires two complete circuits to deliver its meaning—just as the strip's single surface loops back to reveal that inside and outside are continuous, the pervert's act loops back to reveal falsity as its own interior lining, the hidden "other side" that is nonetheless always already present on the same surface.

the remark is the one pinpointed by Jean Genêt, that there is always in the exercise of the perverse act, a place in which the pervert really wants to have put the brand of falsity (la marque de faux).

The phrase "a place in which the pervert really wants to have put the brand of falsity" is theoretically loaded because it combines intentionality ("really wants") with spatial localization ("a place")—implying that the mark is neither accidental nor universal across the act but is deliberately concentrated at a specific structural locus. The word "brand" (marque) further implies an irreversible, material inscription—not a fleeting awareness but a permanent stamp—suggesting that the falsity is not a belief the pervert entertains but a mark they produce, linking the act structurally to the logic of the signifier and the (-φ) as the index of castration's inscription in the scene.
