Layer-Cake Model

The "layer-cake model" is Johnston's attribution to Hegel of a linear, stratified ontology of emergence, in which distinct levels of reality — from spatio-temporal mechanics at the base up through biological life, spirit (Geist), and finally artistic-religious-philosophical culture at the apex — are stacked in a hierarchical sequence. Each layer is preserved yet superseded (aufgehoben) by the one above it; crucially, the differences-in-kind between levels are maintained rather than collapsed. This is the Hegelian dialectical logic of sublation (Aufhebung) applied to the philosophy of nature and mind: lower strata are necessary conditions for higher ones, but the higher cannot be reduced to or identified with the lower. The model is "linear" in the sense that the directional movement is asymmetric and non-circular — mechanics does not loop back into Geist in any constitutive way.

Johnston deploys this model polemically, contrasting it with what he calls Schelling's "layer-doughnut" — a circular topology in which the highest and lowest levels curve back into each other via the Spinozistic identity of natura naturans and natura naturata. The theoretical charge of the contrast is that Žižek, despite his avowed Hegelianism and dialectical-materialist commitments, effectively imports a Schellingian circular-emergence structure when he recruits quantum physics as a partner science — a move Johnston regards as inconsistent. On the layer-cake reading, Hegel's materialism is one of irreducible stratification, not of panpsychist or quantum-holistic convergence at the extremes.

Relative to the cross-referenced concept of Dialectics, the layer-cake model is a specification of what Hegelian sublation looks like when applied to ontological emergence — it cashes out the dialectical logic of preservation-in-cancellation as a stratified, directional, non-reductive hierarchy. The concept of Emergence is its direct ontological content: the layer-cake is a theory of how higher-order phenomena (life, mind, Geist) emerge from but are not identical to lower-order physical substrates.

The concept also speaks indirectly to Phenomenology: Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit is the canonical text for thinking the movement from natural consciousness through to absolute knowing, and the apex of the layer cake — "artistic-religious-philosophical Geist" — maps onto that trajectory. Against Panpsychism (the view that mentality pervades all layers uniformly), the layer-cake model insists on categorical breaks between strata. The Subject, in this frame, is a product of the uppermost layers and cannot be read back into the quantum or mechanical substrate without a category error — which is precisely Johnston's complaint about Žižek's quantum turn. The concept thus positions Hegelian dialectical materialism as committed to asymmetric, difference-preserving emergence, in contrast to any circular or holistic ontology.
