Lack of Lack

The "lack of lack" names the catastrophic structural condition in which the symbolic order's constitutive void — the gap that is normally maintained by castration and that makes desire possible — is threatened with closure. In ordinary symbolic functioning, lack is what keeps objet petit a at a safe, circulating distance: objects can be given, taken away, lost, and refound precisely because they remain alienable, mediated by the signifier's differential structure. When this lack itself is lacking — when the gap that sustains desire risks being abolished — the subject is no longer protected by the symbolic economy of exchange and substitution. Objet petit a, instead of remaining the elusive cause of desire glimpsed only obliquely, presses into overproximity with the subject. This is the structural condition Copjec, following Lacan's Seminar X, identifies as the trigger of anxiety: not the absence of the object, but the terrifying foreclosure of absence itself.

The concept is thus a precise inversion of ordinary lack. While lack is productive — it is what introduces desire, the signifier, and the subject into the real — the lack of lack is destructive of the symbolic fabric. It designates the moment when the negation that the symbolic normally performs on the real ceases to function, when the self-differentiating operation of the signifier stalls. Crucially, Copjec argues that this condition cannot be addressed through interpretation (which presupposes the mediating play of signification), but only through the symbolic's repeated, self-differentiating negation — a negation that must operate without naming, lest naming itself become a suturing of the gap. This is a direct extension and sharpening of the canonical Anxiety definition: where that definition states that anxiety arises "not from the loss of the object but the terrifying possibility of its recovery," the "lack of lack" provides the underlying structural mechanism — the disappearance of the void that normally keeps the object at a circulating, alienable distance. It thereby links Anxiety back to its foundational canonical anchors: Lack (the constitutive void), Objet petit a (the structural correlate of lack), and Gap (the béance that must remain open for desire to persist).

The concept also enters into productive tension with Fantasy. Fantasy is the structure ($◇a) that normally manages the subject's relation to objet petit a, maintaining a constitutive distance from the real. The "lack of lack" names the condition in which this fantasy frame breaks down — when the object no longer respects its fantasmatic coordinates and collapses into the subject's space. This is why interpretation (which operates within the symbolic-imaginary field of fantasy and meaning) is insufficient: what is needed is a symbolic negation of the real that does not pass through naming. The cross-referenced concept of Doubt as Defense Against the Real also gains its precise meaning here — doubt is a secondary symbolic operation deployed when the primary protection offered by Lack has already failed, a last-ditch effort to reintroduce distance where the gap has been foreclosed.
