Jungian Psychical Energy

Jungian Psychical Energy names the theoretical gesture by which Jung neutralizes the Freudian concept of libido — understood by Lacan as the effective, irreducible presence of desire — into a generalized, de-sexualized notion of "interest" or psychical energy. In Lacan's reading, this neutralization operates by evacuating the specificity of libido as a structural operator tied to lack and the signifier, and replacing it with an undifferentiated energetic substrate that can then be rechanneled into the archetype and, ultimately, into a symbolics of universal meaning. The Jungian move thus abolishes the constitutive gap — the manque — that is, for Lacan, the very condition of the unconscious and of desire. Where Freudian libido marks an irreducible remainder produced by the signifier's cut into the living body, Jungian psychical energy smooths over that cut by positing a neutral, fungible force that flows into culturally shared symbols.

This concept belongs to Lacan's polemical series of differentiation from rivals — Jung, ego-psychology, and hermeneutics (Ricoeur) — all of whom, in different ways, domesticate the radical rupture introduced by the Freudian unconscious. Jung's recourse to a generalized psychical energy is structurally parallel to Ricoeur's subordination of the unconscious to a philosophy of historical signs and meaning: both operations absorb the dimension of lack and discontinuity into a horizon of sense, of symbolic plenitude, thereby neutralizing precisely what Lacan takes to be Freud's decisive discovery — that the unconscious is structured like a language, not like a reservoir of archetypally organized energy.

This concept appears once in jacques-lacan-seminar-11-1 (p. 168), situated within Lacan's sustained effort in Seminar XI to demarcate the Freudian unconscious from all its theoretical competitors. It is directly positioned against the cross-referenced canonical concepts of Desire, Lack, the Signifier, the Unconscious, and Structuralism: where Desire in the Lacanian sense is constituted by an irreducible structural lack — produced by the signifier's impact on the body and sustained by its own unfulfillability — Jungian Psychical Energy proposes instead a smooth, generalizable force ("a much more generalized notion of interest") that is indifferent to the specificity of the signifying cut. This means Jung effectively cancels Lack as a structural operator: the Lacanian claim that "nothing in the real is missing; a lack can only be introduced when there are signs and symbols" presupposes a radical asymmetry between desire and any energetic substrate, an asymmetry that Jungian neutralization collapses.

Relative to Structuralism and the Unconscious, the Jungian move is also a failure of structural thinking: it replaces the differential, non-substantial logic of the signifier (meaning produced through difference and gap) with a positive, quantifiable energy that flows toward archetypal symbols. The unconscious, for Lacan, is constituted by discontinuity and pulsation — "neither being nor non-being, but the unrealized" — not by an energetic reservoir that archetypes can drain and redirect. Jungian Psychical Energy thus functions in this corpus as a negative pole, a counter-example that clarifies, by contrast, what is irreducible in Lacan's own account: the specific causality of libido as the effective presence of desire, not its generalization into an unspecific psychical force.

The term "neutralization" is theoretically decisive: it signals not mere modification but the cancellation of a specific causal function — libido as the structural operator of desire and lack — by substituting it with something "much more generalized," a phrase that marks the loss of the differential specificity on which the Lacanian-Freudian unconscious depends. "Interest" as a replacement for libido further signals a regression from structural causality to a phenomenological, intentional vocabulary, exactly what structuralist and Lacanian theory sets itself against.
