Inbuilt Negativity

Inbuilt Negativity names the constitutive lack-of-being that is not accidentally introduced into the subject from outside but is transmitted with the very positive ontological order of being itself. For Zupančič, this negativity is not a secondary privation or a wound inflicted on an otherwise complete organism; it is structurally co-original with existence. The drive does not circulate around a contingent lost object that might one day be recovered — it circulates around this inbuilt negativity as its permanent, irreducible centre. Crucially, satisfaction or enjoyment functions here not as the drive's terminal goal but as its means: the drive uses satisfaction instrumentally to keep returning to, and thereby sustaining, the repetition of negativity itself.

This concept is also Zupančič's way of anchoring the death drive to primal repression. Primal repression (Urverdrängung) — the originary act by which a first signifier is fixated without having been previously conscious — marks the point where the biological organism is captured by signification and a gap opens that can never be closed. Inbuilt Negativity is precisely that gap regarded from the ontological rather than the topographical side: it is what the organism carries as its structural condition of possibility once it has entered the order of the drive. This is why the death drive, in Zupančič's reading, is not a regression to the inanimate but an opening of alternative paths to death — paths that are possible only because being was never fully positive to begin with.

The concept appears in Zupančič's What Is Sex? (what-is-sex-alenka-zupancic, p. 113) as part of a sustained rereading of the death drive. It sits at the intersection of several cross-referenced canonical concepts. In relation to the Death Drive, Inbuilt Negativity specifies what the death drive is structured around: not the inanimate as a positive terminus, but a negativity that was never absent from being. This aligns with the canonical synthesis's point that the death drive is "a trace of a trauma that cannot be experienced as such" — Inbuilt Negativity gives that trace an ontological address. In relation to the Drive and its canonical account of the loop (la pulsion en fait le tour), Inbuilt Negativity names what the loop encircles: not the objet petit a as a contingent lost thing, but a structural hole transmitted with the positive order of being. In relation to the Gap, Inbuilt Negativity functions as its ontological intensification: whereas the Gap is the structural opening constitutive of the signifying order and of desire, Inbuilt Negativity specifies that this gap is not extrinsic to being but inbuilt — carried within the very fabric of ontological positivity.

The concept also depends on Beyond as its broader frame. The pleasure principle operates within the positive order of tension-regulation; Inbuilt Negativity is precisely what lies beyond that order — it is the register the drive reaches when satisfaction is shown to be not its goal but its instrument. Finally, the link to primal repression ties Inbuilt Negativity to the structural moment at which the organism is captured by the signifier and Jouissance becomes split from mere biological satisfaction, producing the constitutive Lack that organises the subject. Inbuilt Negativity is thus an extension and ontological sharpening of all these canonical concepts, gathering them into a single formulation: the hole is not added to being — it is how being arrives.

The phrase "transmitted with the 'positive' ontological order of being" is theoretically decisive because it refuses any account on which negativity is a secondary subtraction from a prior wholeness: the scare quotes around 'positive' signal that positivity itself arrives already marked by lack. "Around which it circulates" then connects this ontological claim directly to the structural definition of the drive as a loop — the drive's circulation is not incidental but the very mode in which inbuilt negativity is sustained and reproduced.
