Ideological Jouis-sense
ELI5
Ideology doesn't just trick people with false ideas — it also gives them a secret pleasure in going along with it, a kind of enjoyment baked right into the feeling that things "make sense." That hidden enjoyment is what "ideological jouis-sense" points to.
Definition
Ideological jouis-sense is Žižek's neologism — a portmanteau of jouissance and sens (sense/meaning), with an embedded "enjoy-meant" — that names the libidinal surplus that sustains ideological submission at a level beneath and beyond symbolic interpellation. The concept designates not ideology's content (its beliefs, its narratives, its hailings) but its affective-libidinal underside: the irreducible kernel of enjoyment that the subject derives from participating in ideological sense-making itself. Drawing on Lacan's reading of the burning-child dream, Pascal's wager, Kafka's bureaucratic sublime, and Zhuang Zi's butterfly paradox, Žižek establishes that ideology cannot be dissolved by demystification, because what holds the subject in place is not an illusion masking reality but a fantasy-construction that constitutes reality — and that fantasy is lubricated by this surplus enjoyment.
The concept thus marks the failure of Althusser's theory of interpellation: interpellation accounts for how the subject is symbolically recruited into a social role, but it cannot account for why the subject finds that recruitment satisfying, even gratifying. Ideological jouis-sense names exactly this excess — the 'enjoyment-in-sense' that accrues to the very act of submitting to the ideological call, a traumatic and senseless residue that escapes full symbolic internalization and that the symbolic order can neither absorb nor expel. It is the point where ideology stops being merely a structure of misrecognition and becomes an economy of enjoyment.
Place in the corpus
The concept appears in slavoj-zizek-the-sublime-object-of-ideology-the-essential-zizek-verso-2009 and sits at the precise intersection of several canonical concepts whose definitions have been supplied here. It functions as a specification and deepening of Ideology: where the canonical synthesis establishes that ideology operates libidinally — through surplus-enjoyment as an "ideological bribe" and through the fantasmatic supplement that papers over social antagonism — ideological jouis-sense names the precise mechanism by which that libidinal operation is accomplished. It answers the question the canonical concept raises but does not fully resolve: what holds the subject inside ideology once cynical distance has stripped away conscious belief?
The concept is equally a critique of Interpellation: Althusser's hailing operates at the symbolic-imaginary level, but ideological jouis-sense designates the Real remainder that interpellation cannot capture — the enjoyment-surplus that is the actual condition of ideological submission, not its mere accompaniment. This aligns with the corpus-wide post-Althusserian argument that the psychoanalytic subject is precisely what escapes the interpellative call. At the same time, the concept draws on Fantasy (ideology is a fantasy-construction that constitutes reality, not a veil over it), Jouissance (the libidinal surplus is specifically jouissance — here folded into meaning as "jouis-sense"), and Alienation (the subject's constitutive loss in the signifier is the opening that ideology exploits). The pun-structure of the neologism — jouis-sense, enjoy-meant — formally enacts the Lacanian insight that the registers of enjoyment and sense (the Real and the Symbolic) are never simply separate: ideology is the site where they are knotted together in a way that produces subjective attachment.
Key formulations
The Sublime Object of Ideology (page unknown)
what we might call the ideological jouis-sense, enjoyment-in-sense (enjoy-meant), proper to ideology.
The quote is theoretically dense precisely because of its three-layered wordplay: "jouis-sense" fuses jouissance (enjoyment, in Lacan's technical sense) with sens (sense/meaning), while the parenthetical "enjoy-meant" reveals a third fold — enjoyment as something always already intended or "meant" by the ideological structure. This compression formally performs the concept's central claim: that in ideology, enjoyment and meaning are not separable economies but are sutured together into a single libidinal-symbolic operation, making ideological attachment irreducible to either false belief or raw drive alone.

INTRODUCTION
Theoretical move: Žižek argues that Althusser's theory of ideological interpellation fails to account for the traumatic, senseless residue that is the very condition of ideological submission; drawing on Pascal, Kafka, Lacan's reading of the burning-child dream, and the Zhuang Zi paradox, he establishes that ideology functions not as illusion masking reality but as a fantasy-construction that *constitutes* reality, sustained by an irreducible surplus of jouissance ('jouis-sense') that escapes symbolic internalization.
