Homeostasis
ELI5
Homeostasis is the mind's automatic effort to stay balanced and avoid too much tension or excitement — like a thermostat trying to keep a room at the same temperature. Lacan points out that Freud built his whole theory of the mind around this idea, but also that desire and drives keep breaking the thermostat.
Definition
Homeostasis, as it appears in Lacan's seminars, names the governing economic principle of the psychic apparatus: the tendency of the mental system to maintain, as far as possible, a minimal or constant level of excitation. In jacques-lacan-seminar-2, Lacan traces the concept back to Freud's Project for a Scientific Psychology, arguing that the entire schema of facilitation, hallucination, and primary process is already secretly organized by homeostasis — understood as a thermodynamic balance between energy entering and exiting the apparatus ("implying something which is called an energy both at the entry and the exit"). This is not merely a biological metaphor but the foundational metaphysics of Freud's economic model, one that will require the introduction of information and the imaginary to resolve its internal contradictions (particularly the unavoidable reinstatement of consciousness-perception as a reality-corrective). Homeostasis, in this sense, is the name Lacan gives to the deepest structural assumption behind Freud's earliest theorization of the psyche.
In jacques-lacan-seminar-11, homeostasis is explicitly linked to the pleasure principle and re-described in terms that go beyond simple tension-reduction. Lacan specifies that what Freud was reaching toward is not merely the crossing of a threshold of excitement but "a distribution of ways" — a topological arrangement of pathways through which the subject seeks equilibrium. This subtler formulation situates homeostasis not as a crude discharge mechanism but as a structural tendency that organizes the subject's relation to excitation across multiple channels. Crucially, this principle is what the drive — and specifically the partial drive — both serves and transgresses: homeostasis is the regulatory horizon against which jouissance and the death drive emerge as irreducible excesses.
Place in the corpus
In the corpus, homeostasis functions as the conceptual infrastructure beneath the pleasure principle. As Lacan argues in jacques-lacan-seminar-2, it is the silent organizing principle of Freud's Project, preceding its explicit naming, and it generates the tension at the heart of Freud's early metapsychology: by grounding the apparatus in homeostasis, Freud is forced to reintroduce consciousness-perception as a corrective, which is precisely the problem the pleasure/reality principle dialectic is designed to manage. In jacques-lacan-seminar-11, homeostasis is recast in relation to the partial drive, repression, and the development of attention (Aufmerksamkeit), showing how the very elaboration of the mental apparatus is driven by the attempt to maintain this equilibrium.
Relative to the canonical cross-references: homeostasis is effectively the economic name for what the pleasure principle does — it is the mechanism by which the pleasure principle operates, the "how" beneath the "what." Where the pleasure principle designates the governing rule (reduce tension, seek discharge), homeostasis names the systemic tendency that enacts it. The partial drive, by contrast, is precisely what resists or loops around this tendency — its circular, aim-inhibited circuit never resolves into homeostatic rest, and its objects are instantiations of objet petit a, the structural gap that keeps desire in motion rather than satisfied. Fantasy and desire likewise presuppose the failure of homeostasis: desire persists as desire only because the homeostatic economy cannot close around das Ding, leaving a constitutive remainder. Homeostasis thus occupies the position of the regulatory ideal whose impossibility of full realization is what generates the entire Lacanian account of the subject.

this schema is in fact based on what will later be isolated in the term 'homeostasis'… The notion of homeostasis is therefore already there, implying something which is called an energy both at the entry and the exit.
The phrase "what will later be isolated in the term 'homeostasis'" is theoretically loaded because it performs a retroactive reading: Lacan identifies homeostasis as the latent conceptual core already operative in Freud's Project before it was named, making it an originary rather than a derived principle. The specification "an energy both at the entry and the exit" further anchors homeostasis in an explicitly thermodynamic, economic logic — a closed-circuit energy balance — which is precisely the metaphysical framework Lacan will both inherit and displace through the introduction of the signifier and the Real.

THE PARTIAL DRIVE AND ITS CIRCUIT > QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Theoretical move: The passage argues that the object of the drive must be understood topologically as a "headless subjectification" distinct from both the subject-with-holes constituted by the signifier and the objects of fantasy and desire, while also linking the repression of libido under the pleasure principle to the very development of the mental apparatus (including attention/Aufmerksamkeit).
Freud was reaching towards something that, in the subject, is intended to maintain to the greatest possible degree what I have called homeostasis. This does not simply mean the crossing of a certain threshold of excitement, but also a distribution of ways.

THE FR EUDIAN SCHEMATA OF TH E P S YCHIC APP ARATUS > IX
Theoretical move: Lacan traces the internal logic of Freud's *Project* schema, showing how the attempt to eliminate consciousness (by grounding the psychic apparatus in homeostasis, facilitation, and hallucination as primary process) necessarily reinstates consciousness-perception as an autonomous corrective system for reality-testing—and that this tension, rather than marking a conversion to psychology, is the continuous unfolding of a single metaphysics that will only be resolved by introducing information and the imaginary.
