Historicist Reduction, as coined by Copjec in Read My Desire, names the theoretical operation by which Foucauldian post-structuralist historiography collapses the social field entirely into immanent relations of power and knowledge. By making power the ultimate and self-sufficient explanatory horizon — by refusing any remainder that exceeds positivity — this move renders the social order a closed, self-referential web. Copjec's argument is that this closure is not an achievement but a loss: it sacrifices the very thing Foucault's most productive analyses presupposed, namely a mode of existence (his notion of "plebness") that is irreducible to any predicate conferred by power-knowledge networks.
