Sometimes when we swap one word for another — like translating a word into a foreign language — we're just making a straight swap without creating anything new. Lacan calls this a "heteronymous substitution," and he uses it to show what metaphor is not: real metaphor always produces a spark of new meaning, while this kind of swap stays flat.
Definition
Heteronymous substitution is Lacan's precise technical label for the operation that occurs on the substitutive (paradigmatic) axis of the signifying chain when one term is replaced by its equivalent in another language — that is, when a signifier is swapped out for a different phonetic/graphic body that nominally carries the same meaning. In Seminar 5, Lacan introduces the term to sharpen a crucial structural distinction: not every substitution on the paradigmatic axis is a metaphor. A heteronymous substitution is a "mere" translation — the replacement of one signifier by another that covers the same semantic ground — whereas metaphor proper involves the substitution of one signifier for another in such a way that a surplus of meaning, a new signified effect, is generated. The heteronymous substitution stays at the level of the signifier's surface exchange; metaphor crosses the bar and produces something that was not there before.
This distinction is deployed in the context of Lacan's structural analysis of both the Freudian forgetting of "Signorelli" and the Witz "famillionaire." Both formations involve the simultaneous play of two axes: the metonymic-combinatory axis (displacement, Verschiebung, contiguity) and the metaphoric-substitutive axis (condensation, Verdichtung, substitution). By carving out heteronymous substitution as a distinct category — translation without metaphorical spark — Lacan is also implicitly distinguishing between two modes of repression: Unterdrückung (the pressing-down or suppression of a signifier that slides out of place on the substitutive axis) and Verdrängung (repression proper, which is aligned with metaphor and the production of a new, unconscious signified). Heteronymous substitution thus marks the floor below which signifying exchange does not yet constitute the properly unconscious operation of metaphor.

The concept appears once in jacques-lacan-seminar-5 (p. 41), embedded in Lacan's structural reading of Freudian parapraxis and joke-formation. Its role is primarily differential and clarificatory: it exists to carve out a negative space around the concept of Metaphor. By defining heteronymous substitution as the type of substitution that does not produce a new signified, Lacan sharpens what metaphor must do — namely cross the bar and generate the surplus condensation that aligns it with Freudian Verdichtung (Condensation). The concept is thus a specification and a limit-case of the metaphor/substitution axis, a species of the broader category of substitution that stops short of metaphoricity.
