Hermeneutic Circle

The "hermeneutic circle," as mobilized in Žižek's argument in Sex and the Failed Absolute, designates a specific epistemological trap: when interpretation always already presupposes the transcendental framework it claims to discover, thought moves in a closed loop, confirming its own conditions of possibility without ever touching anything outside them. Every act of reading material reality through a conceptual-symbolic grid simply finds what that grid pre-inscribes — the "presuppositions" are both starting point and conclusion, ensuring the circle never opens onto anything genuinely exterior.

Žižek's theoretical move here is to argue that the only viable exit from this circle is not a methodological reform (bracketing presuppositions, adopting a more neutral stance) but an ontological wager: that the structure which organizes symbolic space — specifically, the self-reflexive, non-orientable topology exemplified by the Klein bottle — is not merely a feature of how subjects represent reality but is immanent to material reality itself. Quantum physics is invoked as empirical confirmation that reality at its most basic level is sustained by a network homologous with the structure of signification. The hermeneutic circle is thus escaped not by stepping outside interpretation but by collapsing the gap between the interpretive form and the structure of the Real — making the symbolic topology co-extensive with, rather than imposed upon, what is.

Žižek's solution is to assert a homology between Symbolic space and the Real — specifically invoking the Topology of the Klein bottle, which is the paradigmatic non-orientable surface in Lacanian topology, one whose inside and outside are continuous and indistinguishable. If the Real is itself topologically structured in the same way as the Symbolic and the Letter (as material inscription), then there is no gap between "our framework" and "reality" that could generate a hermeneutic circle in the first place.

This move is an extension and radicalization of the Lacanian principle that "the signifier makes a hole" in the Real — that the Symbolic and Real are not simply opposed registers but are knotted together in a Borromean structure. The Letter is particularly relevant here: in the late Lacanian framework, the letter is already located in the Real, not merely in the Symbolic, meaning the material trace of inscription is itself a feature of reality. Žižek's wager generalizes this: not just the letter but the entire self-reflexive topology of signification is inherent to material reality. The hermeneutic circle is thus positioned as the residue of a still-dualistic picture of mind versus world, one that Žižek dissolves by pressing the Lacanian identification of topology with structure all the way into quantum-physical ontology.
