Hegelian Emergentism
ELI5
Hegelian Emergentism is the idea that, for Hegel, more complex things (like thinking or spirit) genuinely grow out of simpler things (like plain, bare existence) without having been hidden inside them all along — unlike a magician who pretends to pull a rabbit out of a hat that the rabbit was already in.
Definition
Hegelian Emergentism is the ontological thesis, attributed to Hegel and distinguished sharply from its Schellingian counterpart, that higher-order levels of reality (spirit, thought, logic) arise genuinely from lower-order natural substrates without having been secretly pre-contained or presupposed within them. In the context of the source passage, Hegel's Science of Logic is read not as a continuation of Schelling's philosophy of nature but as its covert refutation: where Schelling smuggles spirit back into nature as a latent potential (the "layer-doughnut" model, in which the inside is always already there), Hegel's dialectical-speculative opening begins with natura naturata — with the determinate, knowable objectivities of nature — and allows the categories of logic to emerge from that starting point without any circular presupposition. The emergence is genuine because it is not reversible: what comes later (thought, spirit, the Concept) is not encoded in advance in what comes earlier (pure indeterminate being or nature as such).
This emergentism is "onto-logical" in a precise Hegelian sense: it proceeds through dialectically generated (onto-)logical categories that make natural objectivities knowable, rather than through a mythology of spirit already slumbering in nature awaiting awakening. The critique mobilizes Lacan's "rabbit in the hat" figure — the prestidigitator who can only pull out what was secretly placed inside — to name Schelling's circular procedure, and implicitly positions Hegel's emergentism as philosophically honest precisely because it does not cheat: the higher order is not conjured from a secretly pre-loaded lower order but arises through the immanent movement of the dialectic itself.
Place in the corpus
This concept appears in todd-mcgowan-dominik-finkelde-eds-zizek-responds-bloomsbury-publishing-2022 (p. 37) as part of a polemic against Žižek's rapprochement between Hegel and Schelling. Its immediate polemical function is to disaggregate what Žižek tends to read as a compatible or complementary pair, insisting on a fundamental ontological difference. Within the frame supplied by the cross-referenced canonicals, Hegelian Emergentism functions as a specification of Dialectics: it names what is distinctively productive in Hegel's dialectical-speculative method — namely its ability to generate higher-order categories from lower-order indeterminacy without cheating — against Schelling's pseudo-dialectical shortcut. It is equally relevant to Absolute Knowing, since the emergentist structure of the Science of Logic is what licenses Hegel's claim that thought can be adequate to being: the categories are not imported from outside nature but emerge from nature's own logical movement, which is what makes Absolute Knowing (the circle closing on itself) theoretically defensible rather than merely asserted.
The concept also shadows Maeontology: Hegel's starting point — pure, indeterminate being — borders on non-being, and the emergentist movement begins from that maeontological threshold. The contrast with Schellingian Pseudo-Emergentism (a cross-referenced concept present by name) is the concept's defining gesture: whereas Schelling's nature already harbors spirit as an unthought presupposition, Hegel's emergentism holds open the gap between levels, refusing the circular pre-loading that the Lacanian "rabbit in the hat" metaphor diagnoses. The invocation of Misreaders is also structurally present: Žižek is implicitly positioned as a misreader who elides a philosophically crucial distinction between two formally similar but ontologically opposed models of emergence.
Key formulations
Žižek Responds! (p.37)
Hegel's ontological emergentism, unlike that of Schelling, begins with the light of the dialectically-speculatively thinkable existence of natura naturata as natural objectivities knowable thanks to (onto-)logical categories
The phrase "dialectically-speculatively thinkable existence of natura naturata" is theoretically loaded because it anchors emergence in determinate, already-constituted nature (natura naturata, nature as produced) rather than in natura naturans (nature as self-producing ground), and the double qualifier "dialectically-speculatively" insists that the move from nature to logic is not a leap of intuition (Schelling's intellectual intuition) but a rigorous immanent movement — the very feature that makes Hegel's emergentism non-circular and genuinely distinct from Schelling's.

Theoretical move: The passage critiques Žižek's rapprochement between Hegel and Schelling by arguing that Hegel's opening of the Science of Logic is actually a covert refutation of Schelling's pure indeterminacy, and that Hegel's emergentist 'layer-cake' ontology is genuinely different from and superior to Schelling's pseudo-emergentist 'layer-doughnut' model, with Lacan's 'rabbit in the hat' critique being recruited to illuminate Schelling's circular presupposition of spirit within nature.
