Fundamental Fiction

Fundamental fiction is Lacan's appropriation of Jeremy Bentham's concept of "legal fiction" — the deliberate use of a constructed, acknowledged-as-not-literally-true formulation that nevertheless does genuine explanatory and regulatory work — applied to the Freudian Grundbegriff (fundamental concept) of the drive. In Seminar XI (p.178), Lacan proposes that the drive, as a Grundbegriff, is not a model but a fundamental fiction: a constitutive theoretical construction that is irreducible, singular, and foundational rather than provisional or interchangeable. The opposition Lacan draws to "model" is precise — a model is always replaceable and can function alongside rival models in the same field; a Grundbegriff cannot. To call the drive a fiction is not to dismiss it as false but to acknowledge that its four Freudian terms (thrust, source, object, aim) do not correspond to any natural, pre-given unity. They are a constructed, disjointed assemblage whose theoretical force lies precisely in their artificiality — the fiction holds together what has no organic coherence.

This move positions the drive at the boundary between the Symbolic and the Real: like Bentham's legal fictions, which create operative juridical realities out of admittedly constructed terms, the fundamental fiction of the drive generates a real effect — jouissance, the looping circuit of satisfaction — out of an assemblage that has no natural model in biology or experience. The "fundamental" of fundamental fiction is thus not metaphysical but structural: the fiction is foundational for the field of psychoanalytic theory, performing a constitutive function that no mere model could achieve.

The concept of fundamental fiction appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-11 at the moment Lacan undertakes his systematic deconstruction of the drive's four terms. It operates as a methodological announcement: before examining Drang, source, object, and aim, Lacan signals the epistemological status of the very enterprise. The concept is therefore an extension and specification of the canonical concept of the Drive — it answers the question of what kind of theoretical entity the drive is. Rather than treating the drive as a natural-scientific model (falsifiable, replaceable, comparative), Lacan insists it functions as a Grundbegriff of the Benthamite-fictional kind: singular, constitutive, and acknowledged as constructed without thereby losing its force.

The concept connects laterally to the Real and the Pleasure Principle. The drive's circuit, as a fundamental fiction, transgresses the homeostatic economy of the Pleasure Principle — it generates Jouissance by looping around an object it never attains, producing satisfaction elsewhere than at any natural goal. By calling this a fiction rather than a model, Lacan aligns with the Real's logic: the drive, like the Real, "does not cease to be written" in the clinic even though it corresponds to no positive, pre-symbolic entity. The Benthamite framing also anticipates Lacan's broader interest in legal and logical fictions as mechanisms that produce real effects — structurally parallel to the way the Symbolic order generates the Real through its own exclusions. The Partial Drive's characterization as a "montage" — a heterogeneous assemblage with no natural finality — is precisely what the label "fundamental fiction" names at the epistemological level.

This term, I should say in passing, is much more preferable than that of model... model is never a Grundbegriff, for, in a certain field, several models may function correlatively. This is not the case for a Grundbegriff, for a fundamental concept, nor for a fundamental fiction.
