Fregean Zero

Fregean Zero is the concept, drawn from Frege's Grundlagen der Arithmetik and introduced into Lacanian psychoanalysis via Duroux's presentation in Seminar XII, that defines the number zero not through any empirical act of counting or psychological intuition of "nothing," but through a purely logical, self-contradictory concept: the concept of "the non-identical to itself." Because nothing in the universe can simultaneously be both identical and non-identical to itself, no object falls under this concept — and precisely that empty extension (zero objects) is what Frege calls "zero." The crucial move is that zero is not a mere absence but the product of a determinate logical operation: self-contradiction generates an originary void that is structurally marked, counted, and named. Lack is thereby installed at the very foundation of the number sequence — it is not the residue of counting but its generative condition.

For Lacanian psychoanalysis, this Fregean maneuver is paradigmatic: it shows that the subject, like the number series, cannot be grounded in any pre-symbolic self-presence or empirical psychology. Just as zero is generated by a self-contradictory concept whose extension is necessarily empty, the subject is constituted at the point where the signifier "murders" self-identical presence and installs lack as the originary operator. The successor function — every subsequent number generated from zero — is thus a formal homologue of the signifying chain: each element is produced not from a positive foundation but from the recursive operation on a constitutive void. Fregean Zero names that void in its most precise, logically articulated form.

Fregean Zero appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-12 (p.89) as part of Duroux's formal exposition of Frege, and it functions as a foundational theoretical anchor for Lacan's sustained project — explicitly named in the same seminar — of establishing "a logic of lack." Its most direct canonical correlate is Lack: the Fregean argument demonstrates with logical precision what Lack asserts structurally, namely that "nothing in the real is missing; a lack can only be introduced when there are signs and symbols." Zero is that introduction — the first symbolic inscription of a constitutive void. The concept therefore also bears directly on the Signifier: just as the signifier "represents a subject for another signifier" by cutting into presence and generating a constitutive gap, zero represents the empty extension of a self-contradictory concept — in both cases, a differential, non-substantial operation produces a marked absence that then drives a generative sequence.

The concept further intersects with Negation in its logical-formal register: Frege's self-contradictory concept ("non-identical to itself") is precisely a deployment of negation as constitutive rather than merely exclusionary — an internal negation that generates positivity (the number zero, and from it, all natural numbers). This parallels the Hegelian Concept (Begriff), whose "thought of contradiction is the essential moment": Fregean Zero is a point where the logical and the dialectical converge, making self-contradiction the engine of sequence rather than a failure of thought.
