Freedom from the Other

When we say someone is "free from the Other," we mean they no longer need any outside authority—God, the market, society—to tell them their choices are valid or meaningful; they have to own that responsibility themselves, which is both liberating and terrifying.
Definition
Freedom from the Other names the structural condition of genuine modern subjectivity as theorized in McGowan's reading of Kant and Lacan: it is the freedom that becomes possible—and simultaneously foreclosed—when the big Other loses its substantial grounding. In the Lacanian frame, the Other is never simply an empirical authority but the locus of the signifier, the site from which meaning and ontological support for the subject's acts are guaranteed. "Freedom from the Other qua social authority providing an ontological support for my acts" is therefore not merely political emancipation but a structural transformation in the subject's relation to the Symbolic: the point at which no Master Signifier, no point de capiton, can legitimately anchor the subject's choices by appeal to an external ground. What remains when that support is withdrawn is the subject's own self-division—the split subject ($)—as the only available foundation for the moral law.
McGowan identifies Kantian moral philosophy as the authentic articulation of this freedom, precisely because Kant grounds the categorical imperative in nothing outside the subject's own rational self-legislation—no God, no nature, no community. This maps onto the Lacanian Ethics of Psychoanalysis: both refuse the "service of goods," both locate the law in a formal, non-pathological relation to desire rather than in any Sovereign Good. Capitalist modernity nominally produces the historical conditions for this freedom by dissolving God as substantial Other, yet immediately betrays it by installing the market—and its ideological promise-structure—as a new tyrannical authority, a surrogate Master Signifier that re-quilts the social field and re-sutures the subject's split.
