Forgetting
ELI5
Forgetting a name isn't just a random glitch — it's your mind hiding something by pushing a word out of reach, the way a cork gets pushed deeper underwater the harder you try to grab it. Lacan uses Freud's famous example of forgetting "Signorelli" to show that this hiding follows strict rules built into how language itself is structured.
Definition
Forgetting, as it appears in Seminar XII, is not treated as a mere failure of memory but as a structurally motivated operation of the signifying chain. Lacan takes Freud's famous parapraxis — the forgetting of the painter's name "Signorelli" — as a privileged illustration of how the proper name functions within the symbolic order. The circumstances Freud cites as "apparently quite external, quite contingent" are, for Lacan, precisely the point: the apparent contingency of the forgetting masks the structural necessity by which a signifier is evacuated from the chain. Because the proper name is a movable signifier whose function is to "fill holes" — to mark irreplaceability and lack at a specific site in the signifying structure — its disappearance from the chain is not accidental but symptomatic. Forgetting is thus the negative face of the proper name function: where the proper name sutures a gap in the chain, forgetting re-opens that gap, exposing the lack that the name had been covering.
This positions forgetting squarely within the orbit of repression and displacement. The name Signorelli is not simply absent; it has been displaced — its cathexis has migrated along the associative chain to adjacent, less charged elements — while repression operates as the structural bar that prevents the return of the evacuated signifier directly. Forgetting is therefore the experiential, phenomenological register in which the subject encounters the combined work of repression (which bars) and displacement (which re-routes). The "contingent circumstances" Freud mentions are precisely the associative pathways through which displacement travels, and topology (the Klein bottle, the Möbius strip) provides the structural logic that explains why such displacements are not cosmological accidents but effects of the non-orientable surface of signification itself.
Place in the corpus
In jacques-lacan-seminar-12-1, forgetting occupies a hinge position in the argument about topology and the proper name. Lacan moves from the structural properties of the Klein bottle and Möbius strip — surfaces where inside and outside, front and back, are continuous — to the claim that the proper name is not a classificatory endpoint (contra Lévi-Strauss's particularism) but a signifier that marks lack and irreplaceability by filling a hole in the chain. Forgetting is then the moment when that hole reopens: the name fails to appear, and the subject is left exposed to the lack that the proper name had been suturing. In this sense, forgetting is an extension and negative specification of the Proper Name Function canonical: it is what happens when the name-as-suture fails.
Forgetting also sits at the intersection of the Repression and Displacement canonicals. Repression provides the structural bar that keeps the name from returning; displacement explains how the cathexis attached to "Signorelli" travels sideways to substitute formations. The "contingent circumstances" Freud identifies are, in Lacanian terms, the metonymic chain along which displacement operates. The Klein bottle and Möbius strip are not incidental background: their non-orientability is precisely why a signifier can "vanish" from one surface and reappear on what looks like the other side — because there is only one surface. Forgetting thus figures, at the phenomenological level, the subject's encounter with the structural Lack built into the symbolic order itself: the moment the chain shows its gap.
Key formulations
Seminar XII · Crucial Problems for Psychoanalysis (alt. translation) (p.50)
if Freud did not evoke the name Signorelli, he says, it is because of circumstances which are apparently quite external, quite contingent
The phrase "apparently quite external, quite contingent" is theoretically loaded because it names precisely what Lacan's structural argument must overturn: the word "apparently" signals that what looks like random, external causality is in fact an effect of internal signifying necessity — displacement and repression working through the associative chain — while "contingent" is the foil against which the topological logic of the proper name's hole-filling function is asserted.

Theoretical move: Lacan uses topology (Klein bottle, Möbius strip) to argue that the structural properties of surfaces are independent of their immersion in three-dimensional intersubjective space, and then extends this logic to the proper name: the proper name functions not as a classificatory endpoint (contra Lévi-Strauss) but as a movable signifier that marks irreplaceability and lack, designed to "fill holes" in the signifying structure — a function illustrated through Freud's forgetting of the name Signorelli.
