Existence

ELI5

In Lacan's system, "existence" doesn't just mean "being there" — it means being placed outside the normal rule in a way that either founds the rule (like the father who is the exception) or escapes it entirely (like the feminine position), and it's this double outsideness that explains why men and women can never perfectly "fit" each other.

Definition

Existence, as it functions across these three occurrences, is not a synonym for being or essence but a specific logical and structural term within Lacan's formulas of sexuation. Lacan explicitly demarcates existence from essence (Seminar 19, p.16), and from being itself (Seminar 19a, p.88): "to exist is not to be." In the Aristotelian square of opposition, the particular affirmative ("there exists at least one x such that...") is the logical correlate of existence; Lacan seizes on this quantificational sense to argue that existence is always relational — dependent on the other, on an outside, on an opposition. Existence in this frame is not self-grounding presence but is constituted in and through a structural relation of exception or opposition, specifically the relation to the phallic function Φ.

In Seminar XX (p.205), existence receives its most concentrated formulation: it is what is "played out" between the father function (∃x.¬Φx — the paternal exception that founds masculine universality) and the "virgin function" (the feminine eccentric position). Both are instances of a "double decoupling with respect to Φ" — they are posited outside the phallic function, neither simply inside it nor simply negating it. This eccentric, decoupled positing is what Lacan calls existence. Existence is therefore not the sheer fact of there being something, but the structural event of an element being posited in a position that is radically incommensurable with the symbolic-phallic universal, thereby grounding (or un-grounding) the set. Crucially, this incommensurability between the two forms of existence — paternal and "virgin" — is precisely what renders the sexual relationship inexistent: the two poles cannot be brought into proportion because their respective existences are eccentric to the very function that would have to mediate them.

Place in the corpus

This concept lives at the intersection of the sexuation formulas and their underlying logic of quantification, developed across jacques-lacan-seminar-19, jacques-lacan-seminar-19a, and jacques-lacan-seminar-20-cormac-gallagher. It functions as a specification — a technical sharpening — of what the Not-all and the phallic exception (∃x.¬Φx) actually assert at the level of logical ontology. Where the canonical concept of Not-all foregrounds the impossibility of totalization on the feminine side, and the Phallus names the universal predicate that structures the masculine side, Existence names the structural mode of positing that operates at the edges of both: the exception that founds the masculine universal, and the eccentric beyond that escapes (without grounding) the feminine non-set. Existence is thus what both the father function and the "virgin function" share — not a common being, but a common structural eccentricity with respect to Φ.

In relation to Sexuation and Universality, Existence clarifies the logical asymmetry between the two quantificational sides: the masculine "all" is constituted by an existential exception (there exists at least one who is not under Φ), while the feminine "not-all" is marked by the absence of any such grounding exception — existence on the feminine side is not posited as foundation but as an open, indeterminate beyond. This aligns with the broader Lacanian claim (visible in the canonical Universality synthesis) that any "all" is secretly dependent on an excluded remainder; here, that remainder is named as Existence in its most precise sense. The concept also resonates with the Discourse of the Analyst insofar as the analyst occupies a structurally eccentric position — an objet a that is decoupled from the master signifier system — mirroring, at the level of analytic practice, the same logic of eccentric positing that Existence names at the level of sexuation.

Key formulations

Seminar XX · Encore: On Feminine Sexuality, the Limits of Love and KnowledgeJacques Lacan · 1972 (p.205)

What is played out... between the father function and what one could call perhaps the virgin function... is existence, and existence is posited in this double decoupling with respect to Φ.

The phrase "double decoupling with respect to Φ" is theoretically loaded because it specifies that existence is not simply negation of the phallic function but a structural eccentricity shared by both sides of sexuation — the paternal exception (∃x.¬Φx) and the feminine beyond — each "decoupled" from Φ in an incommensurable way, making their radical non-relation (the inexistence of the sexual relationship) a consequence of the very structure of existence itself.

    Seminar 1: Wednesday 8 December 1971

Theoretical move: Lacan argues that the phallus is the signified of sexual discourse (not the signifier), that transsexualism and the common error both mistake the signifier for the organ, and that the non-existence of the sexual relationship requires a new logic built on the 'not-all', existence/quantification, and modality rather than naturalist or Aristotelian categories.

it is not enough to deny the not-all for each of these two pieces, if I can express myself like this, existence to be affirmed... Ambiguities have been perpetuated around this for such a long time that people have come to confuse essence and existence

The Psychoanalyst's Knowledge > I ASK YOU TO REFUSE WHAT I AM OFFERING YOU.

Theoretical move: Lacan argues that the absence of the Other (as heteros) from the sexual relationship is not gendered but structural, grounded in the logic of Zero and One; the sexuation formulas are then developed through a critique of Aristotelian universals and quantification, establishing that the Universal (phallic function) requires the exception ('at-least-one') as its foundation, and that Eros as fusion toward the One is a dangerous mythological delusion with no analytic warrant.

to exist is not to be, namely, that it is to depend on the other... at the level of existence, on the contrary, it is very precisely in an opposition that consists in the cancellation, the emptying out of one of the functions

Theoretical move: The passage articulates the structural asymmetry between the masculine (phallic) universal—grounded in the paternal exception (∃x.¬Φx)—and the feminine not-all (∄x.¬Φx), arguing that both the father function and the "virgin function" constitute existence in an eccentric, decoupled position with respect to the phallic function Φ, such that their radical incommensurability is what grounds the inexistence of the sexual relationship.
