Evental Truth

Evental Truth designates a mode of truth that is irreducible to propositional content, descriptive adequacy, or intellectual assent. As the theoretical move in the Rollins source makes clear, Christian truth — and by extension any truth of this type — operates as an event or happening that conditions experience from within without itself becoming an experienceable object. It is structurally analogous to 'life' and 'light': these are not objects one apprehends from the outside but media that make apprehension possible in the first place. Evental Truth is thus participatory and performative — it is "undergone" rather than "grasped," transforming the subject who is caught up in it rather than informing a subject who stands apart from it.

This distinguishes Evental Truth sharply from the epistemological model of truth as correspondence (a fact matched against a state of affairs) or coherence (a proposition fitting into a system of beliefs). The event-character of this truth means it cannot be archived, re-presented as a stable content, or reduced to a teachable doctrine. It arrives — as an incoming — and the subject is constituted differently in its wake. This aligns structurally with the Lacanian principle that truth speaks in the dimension of the half-said (mi-dire): truth is not fully articulable in the Symbolic register but erupts at its limit, marking the point where the subject's relation to the Real cannot be domesticated into knowledge.

The concept appears once in the corpus, in rollins-peter-the-fidelity-of-betrayal-towards-a-church-beyond-belief-paraclete (p. 114), where it serves as the theological-philosophical pivot of Rollins's argument that institutional Christianity systematically betrays its own founding event by converting it into doctrine, belief-content, and propositional creed. Within that source's argument, Evental Truth functions as the positive term against which religious idolatry (the freezing of the event into a re-presentable object) is measured and found wanting.

Finally, vis-à-vis Phenomenology, Evental Truth enacts a decisive critique: it cannot be recovered through first-person phenomenological description precisely because it is not a datum of consciousness but the very happening that constitutes consciousness anew.
