Event (Nietzschean)

The Nietzschean event, as theorized by Zupančič in the-shortest-shadow-nietzsche-alenka-zupancic, designates a peculiar structure in which the subject who announces the event is not its pre-existing author but is instead constituted retroactively through the very act of declaration. The event is immanent to its own enunciation: it does not originate in a subject who subsequently proclaims it, but the subject-position itself emerges as an effect of the declaration. This is why Zupančič insists that Nietzsche's formula is not "I am the event" — that would presuppose a subject who precedes and possesses the event — but rather "'I' am two," or "'Nietzsche' is two." The event is the irruption of a constitutive splitting: Eins wurde zu Zwei, "One became Two."

This splitting is not a Hegelian dialectical sublation that would reconcile the two terms into a higher unity, nor is it a mystical transformation of one substance into another. It names the minimal topological difference — an "edge" or gap — between two incommensurable positions that have no common measure. The formula "One became Two" captures a time loop: the event reaches back and retroactively divides the "One" that appeared to precede it, while simultaneously projecting a second term that cannot be synthesized with the first. Zupančič explicitly aligns this logic with Lacan's formula of the sexual non-rapport: the Two that results from the event does not constitute a relation, a complementarity, or a whole; it names an irreducible non-relationship inscribed at the heart of what seemed to be a unity.

Within the-shortest-shadow-nietzsche-alenka-zupancic, the Nietzschean event sits at the intersection of several canonical Lacanian structures. Its retroactive constitution of the subject through declaration directly invokes Logical Time: the event arrives "in advance" of the subject who will have been its agent, producing a temporal loop irreducible to linear chronology. The "One became Two" formula engages Alienation at its core: just as alienation means the subject can only come to exist by entering a field that splits it — losing being for meaning or meaning for being — the Nietzschean event produces a subject only by dividing the apparent unity that preceded it; there is no pre-split subject who survives intact. The explicit link Zupančič draws to the sexual non-rapport connects the concept to Sexuation and the logic of the Gap: the Two produced by the event do not form a complementary pair or a relation; they hold apart across an irreducible gap, precisely as the sexed positions in Lacan's formulae of sexuation hold apart without rapport.

The concept also resonates with Extimacy insofar as the event that is "most intimate" to Nietzsche — the very thing he claims as his own declaration — turns out to be exterior to any unified "I," lodged at the split edge between the two that were once one. The Double Declaration cross-reference points to the enunciative dimension: the declaration both performs and constitutes what it names, a structure homologous to the Lacanian notion that the subject is represented by a signifier for another signifier — appearing only in the gap between them. Taken together, the Nietzschean event functions in Zupančič's argument as a Nietzsche-inflected specification of the Lacanian thesis that subjectivity is always the product of a constitutive cut, never the origin of one.

The Nietzschean event could be encapsulated by the declaration 'Eins wurde zu Zwei' ('One became Two'). The exact formula of Nietzsche's declaration is not 'I am the event,' nor 'I will break the world in two,' nor 'I am dynamite,' but ''I' am two,' or ''Nietzsche' is two.'

The quote is theoretically loaded because it refuses all three alternative formulas that would preserve a unified, sovereign subject ("I am the event," "I will break," "I am dynamite") and instead installs the split — 'I' am two — as the very form of the event, placing scare-quotes around the "I" to signal that the subject who speaks is already the product of the division it announces, not its author.
