Essentially Non-Realized Possibility

An "essentially non-realized possibility" names a structural feature of any assemblage or symbolic diagram: a variation that must remain perpetually possible-but-never-actual in order for the diagram's coherence to be maintained. Unlike contingently unrealized possibilities (variations that simply happen not to have been actualized yet), essentially non-realized possibilities are constitutively barred from actualization — their passage into actuality would not merely change the structure but disintegrate it entirely. The "essentially" is therefore a modal operator of necessity: these possibilities must remain impossibly-possible, standing at the threshold of the Real as what the structure can neither contain nor expel.

This concept functions within Žižek's broader argument that assemblage theory's notion of a "virtual diagram" — the field of capacities and tendencies immanent to any actual configuration — is ontologically incomplete. The virtual cannot simply be the sum of unrealized possibilities waiting to be actualized; it must include a harder class of impossibilities that are nonetheless structurally operative. In Lacanian terms, this is the impossible-Real of the structure: a negative space that is not merely absent but actively conditions what remains possible. The logic maps directly onto symbolic castration — the violent ontological opening that makes language's distance from reality possible — and onto the gap that is constitutive of every symbolic order (S(Ø)). The subject, on this account, IS the crack of negativity that holds the diagram open precisely because certain of its virtual variations are locked out of realization.

This concept appears in slavoj-zizek-sex-and-the-failed-absolute-bloomsbury-academic-2019 (p.359) as a critical amendment to assemblage theory's virtual diagram. It sits at the intersection of several cross-referenced canonicals. Most directly, it extends the concept of the Gap: where the gap is the irreducible structural opening that prevents the symbolic order from closing over itself, essentially non-realized possibilities are what positively populate that gap — they are the "content" of the void, the formally possible variations whose actualization is structurally prohibited. They are not the gap itself but what the gap holds in permanent suspension.

The concept also speaks to Lack: like lack, essentially non-realized possibilities are constitutive rather than accidental; they name what must be missing for a structure to function. The difference is that lack is registered after the fact (through the symbolic count), whereas essentially non-realized possibilities are inscribed in the diagram in advance as a class of the impossible-Real. They are the virtual analogue of the Real lack Lacan distributes across the registers of castration, frustration, and privation. Relatedly, the concept implicitly invokes Language and Abstract: language's constitutive distance from reality — its inability to inscribe the sexual relationship — is precisely the effect of this class of barred possibilities at the level of the symbolic. And where the Abstract names a one-sided, isolated determination that has not yet been mediated, the essentially non-realized possibility is the limit case: a determination that cannot pass through mediation without annihilating the whole. It is thus not merely abstract but essentially and irreversibly so.

The phrase "essentially non-realized" carries the full modal weight: "essentially" converts what looks like contingent non-actualization into structural necessity, while "accidentally actualized" names the catastrophic event that would collapse the whole — making the concept a precise articulation of the impossible-Real as the negative condition of any symbolic structure's consistency.
