Sometimes a group — a political movement, a church, a nation — makes people feel like following it is the same as following God or truth, but it's actually just the crowd's own power dressed up to look holy. Ersatz divinity is that fake version of the sacred that a collective produces to keep people loyal to itself rather than to anything genuinely transcendent.
