Entropy and Information
ELI5
The pleasure principle is like a thermostat trying to keep the temperature steady — always pushing toward calm. But Lacan points out that what Freud called the "death drive" works more like information: it's a stubborn pattern that keeps repeating, not because it makes you feel good, but because it carries a kind of structure that goes beyond mere comfort-seeking.
Definition
Entropy and Information, as Lacan deploys the pairing in Seminar II, names a conceptual junction between thermodynamic physics and psychoanalytic metapsychology that allows him to distinguish the pleasure principle from the death drive without collapsing either into a purely biological or organicist account. The pleasure principle, operating on a model of tension-reduction and homeostasis, belongs to the order of energy conservation — it tends toward equilibrium, toward the discharge of excitation, toward a kind of psychic entropy. Against this, Lacan draws on the mid-twentieth-century emergence of information theory (Shannon, Wiener) to introduce a different register: information, understood thermodynamically, is a measure of improbability, order, and differentiation — the opposite of entropy. The repetition compulsion, which Freud himself placed beyond the pleasure principle, operates in this register of information rather than energy: it does not discharge but insists, structuring the subject through a signifying automatism that cannot be reduced to the homeostatic logic of tension and relief.
The theoretical move is thus to use entropy/information as a conceptual bridge between Freud's two economic frameworks. The death drive is not the drive toward entropic dissolution (toward zero tension or inorganic rest in the naive reading) but is instead aligned with the compulsion to repeat as an informational structure — a patterned insistence that eludes purely biological framing. This places the concept squarely against Gestaltist or phenomenological accounts (such as Merleau-Ponty's) that would reduce psychic life to perceptual totality or organismic understanding. The quantity of information — of structured difference, of what cannot be absorbed into equilibrium — is precisely what psychoanalytic experience deals in, and what the pleasure principle cannot account for.

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-2 (p.92) and belongs to Lacan's early return-to-Freud period, where he is fighting on two fronts: against ego-psychology's reduction of the death drive to mere aggression, and against phenomenology's (here Merleau-Ponty's Gestaltism) reduction of psychic life to lived understanding and organismic wholeness. The concept directly articulates the relationship between two cross-referenced canonicals: the Pleasure Principle (homeostasis, tension-reduction, energic economy) and the Beyond / Death Drive (repetition compulsion, the insistence of the signifier, what exceeds any calculus of satisfaction). By introducing entropy as the thermodynamic figure for the pleasure principle's logic and information as the figure for what exceeds it, Lacan gives a quasi-scientific grounding to the structural distinction between the two economic registers Freud himself struggled to articulate.
The concept also resonates with the cross-referenced Repetition: repetition in the Lacanian frame is not mere recurrence but a structured, informationally dense insistence — it carries a pattern that cannot be discharged and cannot be understood through Consciousness or imaginary Ego alone. The pivot to information theory allows Lacan to place the death drive in the domain of the Symbolic (structured difference, signifying automatism) rather than the biological, anticipating his later claim that "the symbolic order is simultaneously non-being and insisting to be" — which is precisely the definition of high-information, low-entropy structure. This use of thermodynamic vocabulary is a specification and materialist anchoring of the Beyond/Death Drive canonical, mapping Freud's metapsychological dualism onto a then-contemporary scientific discourse.

in so far as you are here, following my seminar, you are in the process of see-sawing into this childbirth... In the present state of things, it's the quantity of information.
The phrase "quantity of information" is theoretically loaded because it invokes the technical thermodynamic/cybernetic sense of information (measured improbability, structured difference) against the backdrop of entropy, thereby repositioning the psychoanalytic seminar itself — and the transmission of knowledge it enacts — as a site of informational gain rather than energic discharge; the image of "see-sawing into childbirth" further figures this as a generative, structurally disruptive process that exceeds mere understanding or equilibrium.

Theoretical move: Lacan uses a critical reading of Merleau-Ponty's Gestaltist phenomenology as a foil to argue that psychoanalytic experience cannot be reduced to understanding or totality; he then pivots to distinguish the pleasure principle from the death drive via thermodynamic concepts (conservation, entropy, information), arguing that Freud's repetition compulsion points beyond the pleasure principle toward a category of thought that eludes purely biological or organicist framing.
