Einzigkeit
ELI5
Instead of being unified into one big whole, each person is marked by a tiny, unique feature — like a single brushstroke — and it is precisely this small, separate mark (not some grand totality) that makes you you, while also leaving a permanent gap between who you are and that mark.
Definition
Einzigkeit ("distinctive unity" or "singular uniqueness") names the logical structure of the unary trait as a differentiating rather than totalising unit. Lacan introduces the term in Seminar IX by opposing it to Einheit ("unifying unity"): where Einheit collapses multiplicity into a homogeneous whole, Einzigkeit designates the minimal, non-fusional mark that singularises without synthesising. The unary trait — the einziger Zug — functions precisely as Einzigkeit: it is a single, repeatable stroke that identifies the subject not by likeness or totality but by sheer distinctiveness, a "one" that does not add up into a unified ego-substance but remains a countable, iterable difference. The pivot to Einzigkeit is therefore the pivot to a logic of the signifier proper: what individuates the subject is not a gathered self but a discrete mark borrowed from the Other.
This logic carries an immediate structural consequence: because the subject is bound to a trait that is merely distinctive and not unifying, a gap — a "minus one" — opens between the subject and that trait. The subject cannot coincide with the unary mark that represents it; it is, in that very non-coincidence, constitutively lacking. Lacan frames this as the "solidarity of the status of the subject qua bound to this unary trait," meaning that subjectivity and lack are co-constituted at this juncture. From here he connects Einzigkeit to narcissism (the ego ideal is constituted through the unary trait rather than through specular wholeness), to the "narcissism of small differences" (subjects are distinguished by the slightest differential marks, not by essential properties), and to the sexual drive's privileged role — castration being the structural "minus one" that the drive perpetually circles.
Place in the corpus
Einzigkeit appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-9 (Seminar IX, Identification), the seminar that is Lacan's most sustained treatment of how the subject is constituted through the signifier. The concept sits at the hinge between the theory of Identification and the theory of Lack: it specifies that the identificatory operation does not produce a unified self (Einheit) but a subject marked by a singular, non-totalising trait — which is why identification produces division rather than wholeness, exactly as the canonical synthesis for Identification states ("Identification is not unification"). Einzigkeit thus functions as the logical name for the mode of the unary trait, explaining how symbolic identification (Ego Ideal, I(A)) can be grounded in a single stroke without sliding into imaginary fusion.
The concept equally anchors the canonical account of the Ego Ideal: the synthesised definition notes that the ego ideal is grounded in the einziger Zug — "a sign rather than a full signifier — the minimal mark of the Other's assent that fixes narcissistic cathexis without global envelopment." Einzigkeit is the formal property that makes this possible. Furthermore, the move to Einzigkeit opens directly onto Lack (the "minus one" of non-identity with the trait) and, downstream, onto Castration (the symbolic minus that this structural gap introduces into the real) and the Drive (which loops endlessly around the void opened by this non-coincidence). Narcissism and the Real are implicated through the "narcissism of small differences" — which operates on the logic of minimal distinctiveness — and through lack in the Real as the consequence of the signifier's entry. Einzigkeit is thus not an isolated coinage but a precise logical specification of the mechanism that ties together nearly all the major concepts of Seminar IX.
Key formulations
Seminar IX · Identification (p.110)
by abandoning the unifying unity, the Einheit, for the distinctive unity, the Einzigkeit, I am leading you to the point of posing the question… of the solidarity of the status of the subject qua bound to this unary trait
The opposition of Einheit/Einzigkeit is theoretically loaded because it marks the precise point at which Lacan rejects a Hegelian or ego-psychological model of self-unification in favour of a differential, signifier-based account: "unifying unity" would produce a closed totality, while "distinctive unity" names the minimal, non-synthetic mark that simultaneously constitutes and divides the subject. The phrase "solidarity of the status of the subject qua bound to this unary trait" then formalises the co-implication of subjectivity and lack — the subject does not have the unary trait, it is bound to it, and that binding is already a sign of non-identity.

Theoretical move: Lacan pivots from the unary trait's role in constituting the subject to the logic of privation, arguing that the "minus one" (the subject's non-identity with the unary trait) is the structural condition for lack in the Real, and that this founds the connection between the signifier, narcissism of small differences, and the sexual drive's privileged function in subjectivity.
