Dupe of Fantasy

The "dupe of fantasy" names the structural position of the subject who collapses the constitutive distance between himself and his fantasy — who, instead of maintaining the oblique, mediated relation to fantasy encoded in the formula $◇a, immediately identifies with it as though it were his own full, positive content. In Lacanian terms, fantasy is always already a screen-structure that both organizes desire and shields the subject from the Real of the Other's opacity; to become its "dupe" is to treat that constructed frame as transparent reality, dissolving the very gap that keeps desire in motion. Žižek's use of the phrase — explicitly referencing Lacan's remark on de Sade — indicates that this is not a merely psychological mistake but a structural foreclosure: the fundamentalist subject short-circuits the enigma of the Other's desire (what does the Other want from me? what is the Other's lack?) by positing a full, unmediated answer within his own fantasy scenario.

This immediate identification with fantasy also carries consequences for jouissance. Because fantasy normally functions as a regulated interface between the barred subject and objet petit a — parceling out enjoyment in doses the subject can sustain — becoming the fantasy's dupe amounts to an attempt to appropriate jouissance directly, without the mediating bar of castration. Žižek extends this structural point into ideology critique: liberal multiculturalism, which appears to be the opposite of fundamentalist passion, secretly reproduces the same logic by repressing passion and generating a segregationist tolerance — showing that both positions are mirror-image failures to sustain the productive tension that the fantasy-structure is meant to maintain.

In the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek (p. 354), the concept appears as a hinge in Žižek's political-theological analysis of fundamentalism. It draws directly on the canonical concept of Fantasy ($◇a): where fantasy normally functions as the structural frame that gives desire its coordinates while preserving the subject's constitutive split, the dupe of fantasy names the collapse of that very split — an immediate, unmediated identification that forecloses the question of the Other's desire. This makes it a specification — and a pathological limit-case — of the Fantasy concept. It also intersects with Ideology: Žižek's move is to show that the apparent opposite of fundamentalism (liberal multiculturalist tolerance) is ideologically symmetric with it, both being products of a failed relation to the fantasy-frame rather than a traversal of it. The connection to Kant avec Sade is explicit in the quote itself: Lacan's Sade analysis is the source of the formulation, and just as the Sadian executioner immediately enacts the sovereign enjoyment that Kantian moral law only negatively circumscribes, the fundamentalist immediately enacts the content of his fantasy rather than holding it at the productive distance desire requires. The concept is also inflected by Desire and Jouissance: to be the dupe of one's fantasy is to bypass the metonymic sliding of desire (which depends on the Other's opacity and the agalma-structure of the hidden treasure) and reach for jouissance directly — a structural short-circuit that destroys the very economy it claims to fulfill.

The phrase "immediately identifying himself with it" is theoretically loaded because the word "immediately" signals the absence of mediation — the very mediation that the bar in $◇a is supposed to provide; the dupe collapses the structural gap between barred subject and objet petit a that fantasy is supposed to sustain, and the parenthetical reference to de Sade anchors this in Lacan's own Kant avec Sade analysis, where direct enactment of the fantasy-law is precisely what distinguishes the Sadian position from the properly desiring one.
