Difference

ELI5

The "difference" Lacan is interested in is not the ordinary kind — like the difference between apples and oranges — but the bare, minimal fact that one mark is not another mark, which is what makes language and counting possible in the first place.

Definition

In the Lacanian framework, "difference" as theorized across these two occurrences is not a qualitative, perceptible variation between things — not the difference between red and blue, tall and short — but a purely formal, structural operation that the signifier introduces into the Real. Lacan's argument in Seminar IX is that the signifier's founding function is precisely to connote "difference in the pure state": the unary trait (einziger Zug) does not represent a positive quality but marks a cut, an inscription, a notch that establishes distinctness without reference to any resemblance or gradation. The examples — Paleolithic tally marks, de Sade's enumeration, Chinese calligraphy — are chosen because each reduces the mark to its minimal, repeatable function: not to represent something qualitatively, but to install the very possibility of counting, of series, of the "one more." Signifying difference is therefore prior to and constitutive of meaning rather than being derived from it; it is the zero-degree condition of the signifying chain.

The second occurrence, from Zupančič's reading of Deleuze, places difference in a broader ontological register. Here, difference is elevated to the level of Being itself ("Being, the only and univocal Being, is Difference"), with repetition as the sole mode of access to this Being-Difference. Zupančič treats this Deleuzian position as a foil: by installing difference as an absolute and asubjective ontological principle, Deleuze inadvertently transforms it into a new law — a totalizing ground that undermines the very excess and singularity it purports to protect. This sets up the Lacanian counter-position, which preserves difference not as a metaphysical substance but as the negative, subject-dividing cut produced by the letter and the unary trait operating in the Real.

Place in the corpus

In jacques-lacan-seminar-9, the concept of difference belongs to Lacan's account of the unary trait and the birth of the signifier, placing it at the intersection of the Signifier, the Letter, and the Real. Signifying difference is what the unary trait introduces: a mark in the Real that is not yet meaning, not yet the full signifying chain, but the inaugural cut that makes a chain possible. This connects directly to the Letter (the material support of inscription) and to the Real (into which the unary trait carves its notch). It is an extension and radicalization of Saussurean differential linguistics: Lacan strips difference of any positive, qualitative content and leaves only the structural remainder — the cut itself. The Unary Trait is thus the minimal vehicle of signifying difference, and Identification (specifically symbolic identification) is what the subject performs by latching onto such a trait.

In the-odd-one-in-on-comedy-alenka-zupancic, difference migrates into a debate about ontology and repetition, cross-referencing the Eternal Return. Zupančič uses the Deleuzian formulation to set up a contrast with the Lacanian Subject and with the way Lacanian repetition (Wiederholung) functions not as a celebration of difference-as-being but as the subject's compulsive circling around a missed encounter — the Real as tuché. Where Deleuze makes difference a self-sufficient ontological ground, Lacan keeps difference tied to the subject's constitutive lack and to the impossibility of ever fully accessing the Real. The concept of difference thus lives at the border of ontology and structure, serving as the conceptual hinge between the two sources and the broader cross-referenced cluster of Subject, Real, Signifier, and Eternal Return.

Key formulations

Seminar IX · IdentificationJacques Lacan · 1961 (p.34)

the signifying difference is distinct from anything that refers to qualitative difference... the signifier as such serves to connote difference in the pure state

The phrase "difference in the pure state" is theoretically loaded because it strips difference of all positive, phenomenal content — no quality, no resemblance, no gradation — leaving only the bare structural operation of distinction that founds the signifying chain; "connote" further signals that this is not denotative (pointing to a thing) but operative (installing a differential relation), aligning the signifier's function with the formal, material cut of the unary trait rather than with semantic reference.

    *Seminar 2: Wednesday 22 November 1961* > *Seminar 4*: *Wednesday 6 December 1961* > What then is a signifier?

Theoretical move: The passage argues that the essence of the signifier lies not in qualitative difference but in the unary trait (einziger Zug) — a mark that introduces pure difference into the real. Through examples ranging from Chinese calligraphy to Paleolithic notched bones to the Marquis de Sade's tally marks, Lacan demonstrates that the signifier's function is to connote difference in the pure state, entirely distinct from resemblance or qualitative variation.

Conceptual Stakes of Repetition: Deleuze and Lacan

Theoretical move: Zupančič contrasts Deleuze's ontology of difference-as-repetition (three temporal modes, eternal return as selective force) with an implied Lacanian counter-position, arguing that Deleuze's asubjective account of repetition ultimately installs an absolute law that undermines the very predicates (excess, difference, nomadism) it claims to champion — thereby setting up the conceptual stakes for a Lacanian re-articulation of repetition central to comedy.
