Decoy Impossibility

ELI5

Instead of noticing that the whole system of society might be broken and unfixable, people are given a smaller, more personal problem — "love is impossible" — to focus on, which uses up all their energy for feeling frustrated and leaves the bigger problem untouched.

Definition

Decoy impossibility names the ideological operation by which a manageable, privatised form of impossibility is substituted for the genuinely threatening, structurally irreducible impossibility that haunts a given social order. In the argument of Lacan and Contemporary Film (todd-mcgowan-sheila-kunkle-lacan-and-contemporary-film-other-press-2004), Hollywood romantic love serves this function: the experience of unrequited or thwarted love presents itself as the ultimate limit — the thing that "cannot work" — and in doing so it occupies the psychic position that properly belongs to the Real impossibility of social relations under capitalism. Because the subject is given a concrete, emotionally saturated target (the beloved who is unattainable, the couple that cannot be), the vertiginous, open-ended impossibility of anticapitalist transformation is safely displaced onto the narrow domain of the personal. The decoy impossibility is structurally seductive precisely because it is real enough — it genuinely touches on jouissance and loss — while remaining bounded and narratively resolvable, unlike the structural antagonism it conceals.

The concept draws on the Lacanian logic of the point de capiton and fantasy. Just as the quilting point arrests the sliding of signification by tying the signifier to a momentary stoppage, decoy impossibility arrests the sliding of political discontent by anchoring it to the intimate drama of love. And just as fantasy is the screen that gives desire its coordinates while concealing the Real void beneath social reality, romantic impossibility functions as a fantasmatic frame: it provides a "succinct goal" — win the love object, mourn the lost one — in place of the unrepresentable infinity that genuine social transformation would require. What is displaced is not merely a theme but a quantum of jouissance: the energy of dissatisfaction that might otherwise fuel systemic critique is re-routed and metabolised within the private sphere, leaving the capitalist order intact.

Place in the corpus

The concept appears in todd-mcgowan-sheila-kunkle-lacan-and-contemporary-film-other-press-2004 as a tool for reading Memento against the grain of Hollywood convention. Its immediate theoretical home is ideology critique: it specifies how ideology works at the level of jouissance and fantasy rather than merely at the level of false belief. This makes it a pointed extension of the broader Lacanian account of ideology as constitutively incomplete and fantasmatically supplemented. In that account (cross-referenced above), ideology does not simply deceive; it organises enjoyment, and its deepest operation is libidinal. Decoy impossibility names a concrete mechanism of that libidinal organisation: a Real-adjacent frustration (romantic failure genuinely involves loss) is installed as a substitute for a more dangerous and diffuse Real (the antagonism structuring capitalism as such).

The concept also extends and specifies the cross-referenced canonical of displacement (Verschiebung): where Freudian displacement moves affective cathexis from a threatening ideational content to a less threatening one along associative chains, decoy impossibility performs an analogous operation at the socio-political level — the cathexis of systemic dissatisfaction is displaced from the structural impossibility of social relations onto the personalised impossibility of romantic union. It is simultaneously related to fantasy (the romantic narrative provides the coordinates of desire and screens the Real void) and to the point de capiton (the love-plot quilts together the subject's world into temporary coherence). Where alienation ensures the subject is always already split and separated from full being, decoy impossibility exploits that split by offering romance as the name of what is missing — a partial, substitute object that forecloses the more radical acknowledgment that the lack is structural and irreparable.

Key formulations

Lacan and Contemporary FilmTodd McGowan & Sheila Kunkle (eds.) · 2004 (page unknown)

Romantic impossibility functions as a decoy impossibility, diverting attention from the impossibility of social relationships under capitalism, and positing a succinct goal in the place of the vertiginous infinity of anticapitalist revolution.

The phrase "vertiginous infinity of anticapitalist revolution" is theoretically loaded because it names the Real impossibility — structurally open, unrepresentable, without a satisfying object — that decoy impossibility must replace; against it, the "succinct goal" of romantic love appears as a fantasmatic quilting point (point de capiton) that arrests that infinity and renders desire manageable. The word "diverting" also signals the displacement mechanism at work: not repression or foreclosure, but a re-routing of libidinal investment from the structural to the personal.
