Contingency of Sovereignty
ELI5
The idea is that what gives a king — or any ultimate authority figure — their power isn't some deep, special reason, but pure accident, like being born into the right family. The randomness isn't a flaw to be fixed; it's actually what makes the authority work.
Definition
Contingency of Sovereignty names Žižek's Hegelian-Lacanian thesis that the formal authority of the monarch — and by extension, the Master-Signifier as such — is grounded not in some deeper essential necessity but in an irreducibly contingent, biological particularity. In Hegel's constitutional monarchy, the king's function is to provide the "this" — the singular point of decision that cannot be derived from any system of rational norms — yet the king himself is reduced to a mere appendage: the biological accident of royal birth, and ultimately the penis as the organ of dynastic reproduction. The radical decentering of the sovereign subject is precisely what makes sovereignty operative. This is the S1/S2 split at the level of politics: the Master-Signifier (S1) commands and anchors the field of knowledge (S2), but this commanding function is sustained by a subject who has been hollowed out into a contingent biological particular rather than elevated into rational necessity.
This structure distinguishes Hegel's Absolute Knowing — which, on Žižek's reading, is structured by a constitutive lack in the Other — from Milner's 'surplus-knowing,' the mode of the University Discourse (S2 in the commanding position), which promises to progressively fill in contingency through an ever-accumulating encyclopedic knowledge. Where University Discourse attempts to overcome contingency by more and better knowledge, Hegel's solution is to double contingency: the first contingency (the gap that cannot be rationally resolved) is overcome not by necessity but by installing an even more radical contingency at the apex of the system. Sovereignty is thus the formalization of lack at the political level — the point where the system acknowledges that no rational mediation can substitute for the pure cut of the signifier.
Place in the corpus
This concept appears in slavoj-zizek-less-than-nothing-hegel-and-the-shadow-of-dialectical-materialism-v and sits at the intersection of several canonical concepts. It is most directly an application and extension of the Master Signifier: the king occupies S1, the empty commanding point that anchors the symbolic order, and whose emptiness — its reduction to a contingent body — is the very source of its authority rather than a deficiency. This aligns with the canonical understanding of S1 as a signifier without signified that governs the chain of knowledge (S2). The concept also mobilizes Lack: the contingency of the sovereign is the political expression of the lack in the Other — S(Ø) — because the system cannot provide its own ultimate ground and must instead install a pure particularity there. This is precisely the move Žižek opposes to the University Discourse, which places S2 in the commanding position and suppresses S1 as hidden truth, creating the illusion that knowledge can be self-grounding. The Contingency of Sovereignty thus functions as a critique of that illusion: it insists that Absolute Knowing (properly understood as acknowledgment of constitutive lack rather than achieved totality) requires that the irreducible gap be made visible, not papered over by surplus-knowing.
The concept also engages Alienation and Mediation: rather than mediation resolving the particular into the universal through rational synthesis, here the particular (the biological body of the king) persists as an unabsorbable remainder, a point of radical decentering. This is Žižek's signature move — showing that what looks like a flaw or leftover in the Hegelian system (the arbitrary biological fact of kingship) is actually the system's formal condition of possibility. Particularism is thus not overcome but installed as the sovereign moment, marking the limit at which universal rational mediation must stop and bare contingency must be affirmed.
Key formulations
Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism (page unknown)
This contingency is overcome not by a deeper necessity … but by an even more radical contingency: we posit at the top a subject effectively reduced to an appendix of his penis
The phrase "even more radical contingency" performs the key theoretical operation: it refuses the standard dialectical resolution (contingency sublated into necessity) and replaces it with a redoubling of contingency, showing that the Master-Signifier's authority is sustained precisely by its reduction to a purely biological particular — "an appendix of his penis" — which names the point where the symbolic order bottoms out into the Real, irreducible to any rational mediation.
