Combinatory

In Seminar XI (p.166), Lacan introduces "combinatory" as the structural logic by which the signifier operates upon and within biological reality. The term designates the system of differential oppositions — the combinatorial play of plus and minus, presence and absence — that governs both the formal operations of the symbolic order and, remarkably, the biological processes of sexual reproduction itself. Lacan's theoretical move is to show that meiosis — the cellular process by which chromosomal pairs are separated and remainders expelled — already instantiates the formal logic of the signifier: a combinatory that functions by producing and expelling surpluses. The signifier does not merely analogize nature; it shares with it a structural affinity grounded in this combinatory principle. What meiosis "expels" as chromosomal remainder finds its symbolic counterpart in what the signifier produces as objet petit a — the irreducible leftover of any combinatory operation.

The scope of this concept is deliberately expanded: Lacan argues that "primitive science" — astronomy, social ethics, ritual — is not pre-scientific fumbling but is already a sexual technique insofar as it is rooted in combinatory oppositions that mirror the logic of sexual reproduction. The combinatory is thus the hinge concept connecting the Real (of biological reproduction), the Symbolic (differential signifying operations), and the production of remainder (surplus-jouissance, objet petit a). This directly connects it to Lack, since any combinatory operation that expels a remainder is simultaneously constituting a lack — the structural void left once the remainder has been separated off. The concept also bridges Symbolic and Real in a specific way: by locating the combinatory in meiosis, Lacan grounds the Symbolic's formal operations in the Real of sexed reproduction, without reducing one to the other. This connects to Surplus-jouissance insofar as the expulsion of remainders in the combinatory is structurally homologous to the extraction of surplus-jouissance from the speaking body — in both cases, a system (biological or discursive) generates and expels a residue that it cannot totalize.
