Civilization is Freud's name for the ongoing, never-finished battle between the human urge to bring people together and the equally powerful urge to destroy and aggress — and no matter how much culture, law, and love we build up, the destructive urge keeps pushing back.

In Freud's late metapsychology, "Civilization" names not merely a sociological or historical category but the privileged arena in which the fundamental dualism of the drives plays out at a collective scale.
