Circular Borromean Chain
ELI5
Think of three loops you want to link together in the special Borromean way — to make it work properly, you have to bring the last loop back around to connect with the very first one, so there's no real beginning or end, just a circle; only then do all three loops truly hold each other together.
Definition
The Circular Borromean Chain designates the specific topological operation by which the three-ring Borromean structure achieves genuine knotting: the chain must be closed upon itself, so that the ring which terminates the sequence is simultaneously the ring which inaugurates it. This is not merely a geometric convenience but a logical necessity — without circular closure, the overlapping of double loops produces only an apparent linkage that can be undone; the circularity is what "joins the beginning" and thereby transforms a linear arrangement of rings into the properly Borromean configuration. The circle is therefore the condition of possibility for the triadic interdependence that defines the Borromean knot as such.
This construction directly supports Lacan's clinic: the three-ring chain, once closed, models the co-implication of the Imaginary (consistency), the Symbolic (hole), and the Real (ek-sistence) in a structure where no single term grounds the others, yet each is indispensable. The circularity is what prevents any one register from serving as origin or telos — the chain has no privileged starting point because the closing ring is also the opening ring. In this sense the Circular Borromean Chain is not a temporal sequence but a logical simultaneity written in topological form.
Place in the corpus
Within jacques-lacan-seminar-25, the Circular Borromean Chain is a constructive specification of the canonical Borromean Knot concept: it identifies the precise topological gesture — circular closure — without which the threefold Borromean property (cutting one ring frees all) cannot be instantiated from a double-loop starting configuration. It therefore functions as an internal mechanical account of how the knot is built up, supplementing the canonical definition's emphasis on what the knot is (irreducible triadic interdependence) with an account of how it comes to be.
The concept sits squarely within the late Borromean topology phase described under the Topology canonical, where Lacan moves from surface-topology to knot-theory as the primary formal object for RSI. It presupposes both the Imaginary's property of consistency, the Symbolic's constitutive hole, and the Real's ek-sistence, since these three registers are precisely what the circular chain is said to knot. The circular closure motif also resonates with the Symbolic's retroversive temporality — the closing ring "inaugurates" the chain it also ends, echoing the logic by which, as the Symbolic canonical notes, "things will have been" rather than simply are. The Circular Borromean Chain thus extends the Borromean Knot concept by making explicit the topological operation that enforces the mutual implication of RSI as a non-hierarchical, origin-less structure.
Key formulations
Seminar XXV · The Moment to Conclude (p.45)
I already spoke to you about this circular Borromean chain. It presupposes something which, as they say, joins the beginning, at the start, and this something which can only be the ring which ends it at the same time as it inaugurates it.
The phrase "the ring which ends it at the same time as it inaugurates it" is theoretically loaded because it collapses the distinction between terminus and origin into a single topological element — the closing ring is not added after the fact but is constitutively the opening condition, enacting the non-linear, circular logic that makes genuine Borromean knotting (and by extension the RSI triad) structurally possible rather than merely contingent.

Theoretical move: Lacan works through the topological construction of the threefold Borromean knot from a double-loop starting configuration, arguing that it achieves a genuine knotting only when closed circularly, and that this triadic structure directly mirrors the clinic's triad of Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real.
