Cause as Object

Cause as Object names the Lacanian thesis, developed in Seminar X, that the object implicated in desire's causation is not merely an instrument or aim of satisfaction but occupies a structurally determining, causal position with respect to the subject. Lacan's theoretical move here appropriates Piaget's tap experiment not to advance a developmental psychology but to expose psychology's constitutive blindness: it registers the child's cognitive grasp of physical causality while entirely missing the dimension in which the object functions as the cause of desire — the dimension organized by the phallic relation and formalized as (−φ). The five levels of objet petit a constitution (oral, anal, phallic, scopic, and the desire of the Other) in the S/A (subject/Other) relation articulate how the object at each register is not simply wanted but is causative — it is what sets desire in motion from a position of structural absence rather than positive presence. The "tap" thus becomes an emblem: what psychology sees as a neutral physical object with discoverable properties is, for psychoanalysis, always already libidinally organized around a void that causes.

In obsessional neurosis, this causal object is specifically captured at the anal level, where demand comes to dominate and overlay the desire of the Other. The obsessional's characteristic structure is precisely that he grasps the cause-object — the objet a as cause of desire — but immediately displaces it, covering the desire of the Other with the regime of demand. This means that what in principle should function as the irreducible kernel of desire (the cause, the a) is instead localized and domesticated within the anal economy of retention, control, and exchange. Anxiety, in this frame, is the affect that persists as the "irreducible kernel" precisely because it indexes the Real dimension of the cause that demand cannot absorb — desire's cause cannot be fully neutralized by the obsessional's maneuver of making everything into a matter of demand.

The concept of Cause as Object appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-10 (Seminar X, Anxiety), Lacan's systematic treatment of anxiety, and is directly intelligible only against the interlocking canonical concepts the seminar develops. It is an extension and specification of the concept of Desire: if desire is produced by the causal force of the objet petit a — a structural void, not a positive entity — then "cause as object" names precisely the logical status objet a holds in the desiring economy. The concept sharpens what the Desire synthesis calls desire's "cause" (the objet petit a), giving it an explicit causal-ontological formulation: the object is not merely correlated with desire but is its efficient cause, acting from absence. Against the backdrop of Castration — formalized as (−φ) — the causal object is the remainder left by the phallic operation: what castration subtracts from imaginary completeness leaves behind a void that now functions as cause.

The concept further intersects Demand and Anxiety in a clinically precise way. Demand, in the canonical account, is the transformation of need through the signifier that simultaneously opens onto the unconditional dimension of love while producing desire as a remainder. In obsessional neurosis, Cause as Object shows what happens when that remainder is not sustained as desire but is smothered by demand: the causal object is captured at the anal level (where demand dominates the S/A relation), and the desire of the Other — which should operate as the outermost level of objet a constitution — is veiled. Anxiety then emerges as the irreducible signal of what cannot be domesticated by demand's regime, consistent with Anxiety's canonical definition as the affect that registers the Real pressing in where symbolic solutions fail. Cause as Object thus operates as a diagnostic and structural specification: it names the precise point — the object in its causal dimension — that obsessional structure manages and misrecognizes.

The phrase "the object of his cause" is theoretically loaded because it inverts the ordinary grammatical and conceptual relation: the object is not caused by desire but is itself the cause — the genitive is subjective, not objective. The bracketing of "(−φ)" anchors this causal dimension directly in the phallic subtraction (castration), while "right where demand dominates, that is, at the anal level" specifies how the obsessional's structural solution consists precisely in relocating this causal object within the regime of demand, thereby covering — but not eliminating — the desire of the Other that would otherwise generate anxiety.
