When we want something, there's always a hidden "spark" that gets desire going — not the thing we're chasing, but a kind of gap or absence behind it that causes us to want in the first place; this concept is about how that spark functions as an object with real causal power over the subject, even though psychology tends to miss it entirely.

Cause as Object names the Lacanian thesis, developed in Seminar X, that the object implicated in desire's causation is not merely an instrument or aim of satisfaction but occupies a structurally determining, causal position with respect to the subject. Lacan's theoretical move here appropriates Piaget's tap experiment not to advance a developmental psychology but to expose psychology's constitutive blindness: it registers the child's cognitive grasp of physical causality while entirely missing the dimension in which the object functions as the cause of desire — the dimension organized by the phallic relation and formalized as (−φ). The five levels of objet petit a constitution (oral, anal, phallic, scopic, and the desire of the Other) in the S/A (subject/Other) relation articulate how the object at each register is not simply wanted but is causative — it is what sets desire in motion from a position of structural absence rather than positive presence. Anxiety, in this frame, is the affect that persists as the "irreducible kernel" precisely because it indexes the Real dimension of the cause that demand cannot absorb — desire's cause cannot be fully neutralized by the obsessional's maneuver of making everything into a matter of demand.
