Capitalist Neutrality

ELI5

Capitalism tricks us into thinking it's just "how things naturally are," like weather or gravity, so we never ask who decided to set things up this way. But once you notice that people regularly act against their own interests, you can see that capitalism isn't natural at all — someone chose it, and someone could choose differently.

Definition

Capitalist Neutrality names the ideological operation by which capitalism presents itself not as one historically contingent economic arrangement among others but as the natural, self-grounding background condition of social life as such. On this account, capitalism does not need to conceal itself through mystification in the manner of a hidden conspirator; rather, it effaces the political decision at its foundation by appearing to "emerge out of being itself" — as if it were simply the neutral medium through which human economic activity unfolds. The concealment is therefore not a lie about what capitalism is, but a lie about its mode of existence: it poses as ontologically given rather than politically constructed. This is what makes it ideologically effective — the appearance of neutrality renders the question of an alternative literally unthinkable, since one does not "decide" to have gravity.

The concept gains its critical edge from the Freudian intervention McGowan deploys against it. Freud's discovery that subjects systematically act against their own self-interest — that the psyche is structured around repetition, drive, and jouissance rather than rational utility — dismantles the naturalist premise on which Capitalist Neutrality depends. If human beings were naturally oriented toward maximizing pleasure and avoiding loss, capitalism's claim to simply "develop on its own" in accordance with human nature might carry weight. But the evidence of neurosis, symptom, and compulsive repetition reveals that no such naturally self-interested subject exists. Capitalism's neutrality is therefore retroactively exposed as a political decision dressed up as nature — an ideological achievement rather than an ontological datum.

Place in the corpus

Within capitalism-and-desire-the-psyc-todd-mcgowan, Capitalist Neutrality functions as the specific ideological claim that McGowan's entire argument is designed to contest. It sits at the intersection of the cross-referenced concepts of Ideology, Fetishistic Disavowal, and Political Decision. In relation to Ideology as theorized in the corpus, Capitalist Neutrality is a specification: it names the precise form ideological operation takes under capitalism — not the production of false beliefs about what capitalism is, but the erasure of its contingency, the foreclosure of the question of its political origin. This aligns with the broader Žižekian insight that ideology's deepest mode is not epistemic distortion but the structural fiction that social reality is pre-given and self-sustaining.

The connection to Fetishistic Disavowal is structural: Capitalist Neutrality operates through a disavowal of the political decision, allowing subjects to proceed "as if" capitalism were natural even while, at some level, knowing it is constructed. Crucially, however, Capitalist Neutrality is not simply reducible to fetishistic disavowal — it names the specific content of the disavowed object, namely the founding political act. Its relationship to Jouissance is also significant: capitalism's claim to neutrality papers over the fact that it is organized around the surplus-enjoyment it extracts from subjects, a jouissance that is anything but neutral. The Hysteria and Neurosis cross-references signal that Freud's clinical evidence — subjects who repeat self-defeating patterns — is what McGowan marshals to pierce the naturalist claim, since neurotic repetition is the empirical counter-testimony to capitalism's fiction of a naturally self-interested, pleasure-maximizing subject.

Key formulations

Capitalism and Desire: The Psychic Cost of Free MarketsTodd McGowan · 2016 (p.84)

Capitalism appears as a neutral background that emerges out of being itself, an economic system that simply develops on its own and continues unabated unless it encounters political interference.

The phrase "emerges out of being itself" is theoretically loaded because it attributes to capitalism an ontological rather than a political status — capitalism is cast as self-grounding, as if it belonged to the order of existence rather than decision. The further claim that it "continues unabated unless it encounters political interference" completes the inversion: politics becomes the external interruption of a natural process, rather than the constitutive act that brought the process into existence in the first place.

Theoretical move: Capitalism sustains itself not by hiding its existence (like the Devil) but by presenting itself as natural and self-grounding, thereby concealing the political decision that constitutes it; Freud's discovery that subjects consistently act against self-interest demolishes capitalism's foundational claim to accord with human nature, revealing capitalism as a political construction rather than a natural order.
