Capitalist Animalization

Capitalist Animalization names the specific operation by which capitalism does not merely find or exploit a pre-existing "animal" substrate in the worker, but actively produces and imposes a degraded, naturalized form of human existence as a constitutive effect of its own social relations. The theoretical move is decisive: what looks like a regression—the worker "reduced" to animal-like bare subsistence and mechanical repetition—is in fact a generative abstraction. Capitalism does not strip away a prior human fullness to reveal animal nature beneath; it manufactures the animalized worker as a real abstraction, a category that is simultaneously operative in social reality and shaped by the dynamics of class struggle. Political economy's categories (labor-power, the wage relation, abstract labor) are thus not descriptive of an independent natural state but constitutive of the very social reality they appear to merely record.

This concept sits at the intersection of abstraction and second nature: the worker's animalization is "second nature" in the strict sense—a socially produced condition that presents itself with the apparent inevitability and givenness of nature. The "animal" that capitalism installs is not the biological organism but a real abstraction, a figure formed by the extraction and isolation of labor-power from the full concrete human subject. The process is parallel to the Hegelian Understanding's violence of separation—tearing the worker from her concrete social relations and fixing her as a self-subsisting unit of exchangeable labor—but with the additional Marxian point that this abstraction is real: it happens in the world, not merely in the economist's head.

Its theoretical weight depends directly on the concept of Real Abstraction: capitalist animalization is not a metaphor for exploitation but a real abstraction in the Sohn-Rethel/Marx sense—it operates socially and materially, producing subjectivity rather than merely describing it. This links it to Subjectivity: the "worker" as capitalist animalization names a specific mode of subject-production, one in which the subject is constituted precisely through the stripping away of concrete particularity (craft, community, embodied skill) in favor of abstract, exchangeable labor-power.

The concept also crosses into Second Nature and Ideology: the animalized condition presents itself as natural necessity—as if workers were always already this kind of bare laboring entity—which is ideology's constitutive operation (reality produced by discourse and material practice masking its own genesis). It further relates to Reality: what capitalism produces through animalization is not mere appearance but a structured, symbolically and economically mediated reality, one that is nevertheless dependent on the categories of class struggle for its reproduction. Finally, the concept engages Appearance and Abstract by staging the dialectical reversal in which what appears as a reduction (to the animal, to the abstract) is in fact a positive production—the constitutive violence of abstraction that generates the social real of capitalist labor relations.
