Capitalism as Retreat from Freedom is a concept coined in McGowan's reading of the psychic function of capitalist ideology. The argument runs as follows: modernity, by displacing God as the transcendent guarantor of meaning and order, opened a genuine horizon of radical freedom — freedom in the Kantian sense, which is not liberation into comfortable self-determination but exposure to the traumatic void of self-legislation without an external anchor. This freedom is structurally unbearable because it confronts the subject with the constitutive lack at the core of subjectivity — the absence of any big Other that could tell the subject what to want, what to do, or who to be.
