Bévue

Bévue is Lacan's French neologism — literally "blunder" or "oversight" — through which he retranslates and redefines the Freudian Unbewusst (Unconscious) in Seminar XXIV. Rather than rendering the Unconscious as a depth-psychological repository of repressed content, bévue reframes it as a structural property of language itself: the inevitable stumbling, slipping, and tripping that occurs as one signifier slides toward another. The Unconscious is not a hidden chamber but a function of the signifying chain's inability to fully close on itself — a kind of constitutive miss or lapse built into the very movement from word to word. The term also activates a pun in French: "une bévue" homophones with "une-bévue" / "Unbewusst," making the retranslation itself a performance of lalangue — the equivocatory, jouissance-laden layer of a particular tongue where accidental phonemic resonance becomes theoretically productive.

This recast of the Unconscious as bévue belongs to Lacan's late triangulation of the Real, the Sinthome, and the Unconscious under the sign of undecidability. The Real is what does not cease not to be written (impossibility); the sinthome is identified with the mental as such; and the Unconscious, as bévue, is the register of the incessant, non-mastered slippage that language produces in the speaking being. Because S1 never fully represents the subject for S2, psychoanalysis can yield only a semblance of truth — and the bévue, as structural stumbling, is precisely the mark of this irreducible incompleteness.

Within jacques-lacan-seminar-24, bévue occupies the hub of Lacan's late reformulation of the three registers. Its most immediate cross-referential anchor is Lalangue: bévue is, in effect, a name for the way lalangue — that pre-theoretical, jouissance-saturated, equivocatory stratum of the mother tongue — inscribes itself in the speaking being as a structural stumble. The very possibility of retranslating Unbewusst as bévue is itself a lalangue effect, available only in French, where the phonemic accident produces the theoretical discovery. Bévue therefore extends lalangue's logic by specifying its operational mode: lalangue is the medium; bévue is what happens to the subject as lalangue runs through them.

Bévue also specifies the concept of the Letter in its late, Real-aligned sense. If the letter is the material support through which the unconscious insists, bévue names the phenomenal surface of that insistence — the slip, the lapse, the trip from word to word that the letter produces in speech. It relates to Negation in that the bévue is never a simple error correctable by better knowledge; it is a structural non-coincidence, akin to how negation in the Lacanian sense introduces an irreducible lack into the signifying chain. With respect to the Master Signifier (S1), bévue marks exactly the point where S1 fails to fully represent the subject for S2 — it is the trace of that failure in discourse. And in contrast to the Imaginary (whose register is consistency and the illusion of bodily wholeness), bévue belongs to the fault-line where the Symbolic's pretension to cover the Real breaks down, leaving only the stumble as evidence of what escapes.

This bévue – is that by which I translate Unbewusst, namely, the Unconscious … that means a stumbling, a tripping up, a slipping from word to word.

The phrase "stumbling, a tripping up, a slipping from word to word" is theoretically loaded because it displaces the Unconscious from its topographical sense (a place beneath consciousness) and relocates it entirely within the horizontal movement of the signifying chain — the passage "from word to word" — making the Unconscious not a depth but a surface effect, a constitutive malfunction of language's own traversal.
