Being

ELI5

Being, here, is like a horizon that keeps moving as you walk toward it — language always points to it, leans on it, and reaches for it, but can never quite arrive, because Being is actually the name for that unreachable edge itself.

Definition

In Seminar 20, Lacan develops a logic in which Being is not a positive substance or ground but rather the structural function that "supports all discourse qua discourse" — a support that is itself produced at the edge of a constitutive hole. The theoretical move is precise: substance is defined as what is lacking, and predication is the operation by which each successive predicate provisionally occupies the place of substance, only to be displaced by the next, in an infinite relay. Being, on this account, is never simply present; it is the vanishing support that makes the relay possible in the first place. It is what is before discourse (as its pre-discursive presupposition), what carries discourse (as its immanent structural support), and what is after discourse (as its impossible point of convergence and limit). In this triple structure, Being names the impossible closure of language onto itself — what discourse aims at and can never reach.

This positions Being as essentially co-extensive with the gap it generates. Language represents Being "for the word," in a formulation that echoes but deliberately displaces the Saussurean sign and the Lacanian formula "the signifier represents the subject for another signifier." Being does not pre-exist language in some untouched metaphysical domain; it is produced as an effect — on the edge, at the rim — of the very discursive movement that cannot capture it. The gap of impossibility is thus not a deficiency to be overcome but the permanent open condition under which discourse operates and Being is ceaselessly invoked without ever being fully achieved.

Place in the corpus

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-20-cormac-gallagher (p. 56), a pivotal late seminar in which Lacan is elaborating the logic of sexuation and the formulas of the non-all. Being as treated here sits at the intersection of several cross-referenced canonical concepts. It is most directly an extension of Lack: if lack is the constitutive void that makes the subject and desire possible, Being is the name given to the relay-function that covers and simultaneously reveals that lack at the level of discourse as such. Being is, in effect, what the predication-relay logic circles around without ever landing on — the absent substance that each predicate impersonates. It is also an intensification of Gap: where gap names the structural opening internal to language and the Other, Being names the ontological correlate of that gap — the "edge of the hole" that discourse produces and cannot absorb.

In relation to Language, Being functions as its impossible Other side: language constitutes Being as its horizon precisely by failing to close over itself, confirming the Lacanian principle (evident also in the Language canonical) that language "introduces the dimension of being for the subject and at the same time robs him of it." The Contradiction and Infinite canonicals provide further frame: the triple structure of Being (before/carrier/after discourse) embeds a bad-infinite relay of predication — an endless displacement that never terminates — while the gap Being names is irreducibly contradictory, simultaneously the ground and the limit of all discourse. The Signifier and Predication-Relay Logic cross-references anchor the mechanism: each signifier represents Being for the next signifier, producing the relay that keeps the gap open. Singularity, finally, points to what cannot be universalized through this relay — the one exception that the non-all logic of Seminar 20 is designed to think.

Key formulations

Being is indeed what supports all discourse qua discourse, this is what is produced on the edge of the hole that it constitutes. Being is then at once what is before discourse, what carries discourse, and what is after, the end of all discourse, its point of convergence, its limit.

The phrase "produced on the edge of the hole that it constitutes" is theoretically explosive: it insists that Being is not a pre-given ground but an effect — something "produced" — while simultaneously it is the very operation (the constituting of a hole) that makes that production possible, locking Being and gap into a strictly circular, non-foundational relationship. The triple temporal structure ("before… carries… after") then shows that Being cannot be localized at any one moment of discourse but functions as its impossible total horizon, making it structurally akin to the Real as what resists symbolization from all three directions at once.

Theoretical move: Lacan develops a logic of substance and predicate in which substance is structurally defined as what is lacking, so that predication is itself the covering-over of lack; this relay-structure—where each predicate provisionally takes the place of substance only to be displaced by the next—is identified as the operation of Being qua discourse, and language is consequently positioned as what represents Being for the word, leaving the gap of impossibility permanently open.

Being is indeed what supports all discourse qua discourse, this is what is produced on the edge of the hole that it constitutes. Being is then at once what is before discourse, what carries discourse, and what is after, the end of all discourse, its point of convergence, its limit.
