Autonomy of the Political

The "Autonomy of the Political" designates the theoretical move—ascribed by Žižek to Lenin—by which the political sphere is granted its own causal efficacy and truth-potential, irreducible to economic determination. In the Leninist thesis that revolutionary socialist consciousness must be introduced into the working class from outside (from a vanguard intelligentsia), the Political is not simply a superstructural reflection of economic base-relations but operates according to its own logic, its own site of intervention, and potentially its own evental rupture. To assert this autonomy is simultaneously to break with what Žižek calls Marx's alleged "economism"—the view that political transformation is ultimately driven by, and reducible to, contradictions in the relations of production.

Crucially, however, Žižek does not endorse this autonomy uncritically. The broader argument in which the concept appears treats egalitarian "terror" (Jacobinism, Maoism) as a symptom of the foreclosure of the economic: when the economic is excluded from the domain of legitimate political Truth or evental potential, it returns in distorted form as revolutionary violence. The "Autonomy of the Political" is therefore a doubled concept—it names both a genuine theoretical breakthrough (Lenin's break with mechanical economism) and, simultaneously, a structural deadlock. When the autonomy of the Political is absolutized, the economic is foreclosed rather than dialectically integrated, and the political subject is left without a ground for transformative action that could actually reorganize social reproduction.

This concept appears in the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek (p. 328) within Žižek's sustained critique of Badiou's political ontology. It sits at the intersection of two cross-referenced canonical concepts: Foreclosure and the Badiouian Event. Žižek's argument is that Badiou's anti-Statist politics—which grants Truth/evental status to art, science, love, and (emancipatory) politics, but withholds it from the economic—effectively forecloses the economic in the quasi-psychoanalytic sense: what is excluded from the Symbolic register of Truth does not disappear but returns in the Real as terror. The "Autonomy of the Political" is thus positioned as the ideological presupposition that generates this foreclosure. The Badiouian Event, which is meant to rupture a closed situation from its situated void, cannot do genuine emancipatory work if the economic—where the situated void of capitalist society is most concretely organized—is barred from being an evental site.

The concept also resonates with the cross-referenced Dialectics and Abstract. Asserting an autonomous Political without its economic Other is, in Hegelian terms, an abstraction: a one-sided determination torn from its relational whole. Žižek's insistence on restoring the economic as a site of Event is precisely the dialectical move that would concretize what remains abstract in pure political voluntarism. The Leninist formulation is therefore both praised—as a rupture with crude economism—and implicitly criticized, since the absolute version of that rupture produces a political subject that is structurally akin to what the corpus calls Acting-Out: staging in action (terror, revolutionary violence) what could not be properly symbolized or addressed at the level of the economic Real.

The phrase "breaks with Marx's alleged 'economism'" does double theoretical work: the scare-quoted "alleged" signals that economism is a misreading of Marx, making Lenin's break a break with a phantom—which already complicates the autonomy being asserted. The word "asserts" then marks the autonomy of the Political not as a discovered fact but as a theoretical wager or posit, one whose consequences (foreclosure of the economic) Žižek proceeds to diagnose as symptomatic.
