Archèn Point

The "archèn point" designates the privileged origin point of the cross-cap — its umbilical or self-intersection point — around which the interior-eight (the double-loop of the signifier, Lacan's "Polish signifier") is drawn. When the cross-cap is cut along this interior-eight loop, the surface divides into two topologically distinct regions: a specularisable piece (a disc or spherical flap, identifiable with objet petit a) and a non-specularisable Möbius strip (identifiable with the barred subject, $). The archèn point is thus the hinge of this division — the singular locus whose structural properties guarantee the special, non-reducible status of the interior loop of the signifier. Without its privileged presence, the cut would not produce the asymmetric, topologically differentiated result on which the fantasy formula ($◇a) depends.

The term "archèn" (from the Greek ἀρχή, origin or first principle) names the point's role as constitutive origin, not merely a geometric position. It is the point at which the cross-cap's non-orientable character is concentrated — the navel of the surface. The phallus, in Lacan's elaboration, functions as the key to the constitution of the object of desire at precisely this point: it is through the phallic function that this origin is marked as the site where the specularis­able and the non-specularisable diverge, where the imaginary (the mirror-image) is separated from the real remainder (objet a). The archèn point is therefore neither simply spatial nor simply symbolic; it is the topological anchor of the Real within the surface, the site where structure and origin coincide.

It functions as a specification within the cross-cap's theory: where the canonical cross-cap definition establishes the general logic of the cut producing a Möbius strip and a disc, the archèn point names the precise structural feature — the umbilical origin — that makes this particular cut (the interior-eight) topologically privileged rather than arbitrary. It thus grounds the Möbius strip's emergence not as an accidental result but as the necessary consequence of operating at and around a constitutively singular locus.

The concept relates to its cross-references as follows: it is the point on the cross-cap (= projective plane) at which the Möbius strip is detached from the specularisable piece, mapping directly onto the fantasy formula ($◇a) — the barred subject and objet petit a, whose structural co-presence is the definition of fantasy.
