Antagonism as Real

Antagonism as Real designates a precise ontological claim: that certain fundamental differences—sexual difference, class antagonism—are not symbolic-differential oppositions between two pre-constituted positive terms but rather Real impossibilities that precede and generate the very terms they appear to divide. In Žižek's formulation (drawing on Lacan's "realism of jouissance"), the antagonism is not a relation between two entities that exist independently and then come into conflict; rather, the antagonism is primary, and each term is constituted as what it is only through its role as obstacle to the other's full self-identity. This means the difference is not registered within a shared symbolic framework as a contrast but erupts as a crack or impossibility immanent to the symbolic order itself—what Lacan theorizes as the Real that "does not cease not to be written."

The concept explicitly distinguishes itself from two ideological temptations: (1) imaginary complementarity, which posits that the two terms could, in principle, be reconciled or totalized; and (2) nominalist historicizing, which dissolves the antagonism into a plurality of particular differences, thereby disavowing the structural impossibility. Against both, Antagonism as Real insists that the impossibility is not an empirical failure to achieve synthesis but a logical-ontological condition: the symbolic order retroactively generates and is simultaneously generated by the Real antagonism it cannot absorb. The "third element" (objet a, the transgender figure, the chimney sweep)—far from supplementing or resolving the binary—materializes this pure difference-in-itself, the antagonism before its two poles.

This concept appears twice in Žižek's corpus—in slavoj-zizek-less-than-nothing-hegel-and-the-shadow-of-dialectical-materialism-v and in slavoj-zizek-sex-and-the-failed-absolute-bloomsbury-academic-2019 (p. 133)—and functions as a pivot connecting several canonical concepts. Its most direct anchor is the canonical Real: where the Real is defined as "what resists symbolisation absolutely" and as the impossibility produced by the Symbolic's own exclusions, Antagonism as Real specifies what form the Real takes in the domains of sexuality and political economy. It is not a generic remainder but a structured crack: the impossibility of the sexual relation (Lacan's "il n'y a pas de rapport sexuel") and the impossibility of class totality are both instances of this crack. The concept thus extends and concretizes the Real beyond a merely formal or topological claim.

The concept is equally indebted to the canonical Universality and Castration. From Universality it inherits the Žižekian-Hegelian thesis that the universal is not a neutral container but a "site of unbearable antagonism or self-contradiction"—Antagonism as Real is in effect the ontological ground of that claim. From Castration it inherits the structural logic whereby a constitutive lack produces the terms it appears merely to divide: just as castration introduces "the loss of nothing" that sets desire in motion, the Real antagonism introduces an impossibility that generates the apparent two-ness of sexual or class difference. The concept also bears on Feminine Sexuality: Lacan's "not-all" and the inexistence of "The Woman" are the precise feminine-side expression of the fact that sexual difference is Real rather than symbolic-differential. Antagonism as Real thus names, at a higher level of abstraction, the shared ontological structure behind several canonical Lacanian theses—tying together the inexistence of the sexual relation, the impossibility of class harmony, and the constitutive function of the third element (objet a) that materializes pure difference.

Difference 'in itself' is thus not symbolic/differential, but real-impossible—something that eludes and resists the symbolic grasp. This difference is the universal as such.

The formulation is theoretically loaded because it performs two moves simultaneously: by declaring difference-in-itself "real-impossible," it places antagonism squarely in the register of the Real (what resists symbolization absolutely) rather than the Symbolic (differential opposition); and by identifying this real-impossible difference with "the universal as such," it inverts the classical picture in which universality is a stable container—making universality itself the name for an irreducible, uncontainable crack.
