Affect as Signifier
ELI5
Instead of treating feelings as just raw emotions that happen to the body, Lacan argues that feelings are actually a kind of meaning-making — they work like signs, just in their own special way, sitting alongside but different from the mental images and words we usually think of as "meaning."
Definition
Affect as Signifier is the theoretical proposition, developed in Seminar XIII, that affect must be removed from its traditional psychoanalytic position as a purely economic or somatic quantity and re-categorised as a form of signifier — specifically as what the text calls an "original semantic form" or "secondary semantide." The argument proceeds by way of a close reading of Freud's progressive differentiation between Verleugnung (denial, which bears on perception) and Verdrängung (repression, which bears on affect): because Freud himself had to give affect its own distinct mode of operation, affect cannot be collapsed into a mere discharge-residue of the drive-representative (Vorstellungsrepräsentanz). Lacan draws the consequence that affect belongs, in its own right, to the order of representation — it signifies — even if it does so in a "secondary" position relative to the primary semantides (the drive-representatives). This secondary status does not demote affect but rather specifies its differential function: affect-as-signifier operates at a different level from the representative, acquiring its semantic force through that very distance, much as a second-order code produces meaning by reflecting on and displacing a first-order one.
The further theoretical stake is a redefinition of the signifier itself. By folding affect into the category of signifier, Lacan is compelled to acknowledge a reduplicated non-identity — an Entzweiung, or splitting — at the heart of the signifier that the canonical formula ("a signifier represents a subject for another signifier") does not, by itself, fully accommodate. The signifier is not a homogeneous class: it now contains both the representative pole and the affective-semantic pole, and their internal divergence is precisely what grounds the subject's constitutive division. Affect-as-signifier is thus neither a mere feeling nor a simple idea, but the locus where the body's inscription in language (the drive's passage through the signifying chain) leaves a remainder that is itself significatory — an "original semantic form" irreducible to either pure affect or pure representation.
Place in the corpus
The concept appears exclusively in jacques-lacan-seminar-13 and jacques-lacan-seminar-13-1 (p. 37 in both), making it a precise intervention within the Seminar XIII elaboration rather than a wandering thesis. Its immediate theoretical neighbourhood is the distinction between Verleugnung and Verdrängung — the first linked to the perceptual/imaginary field (cross-referencing Fetishistic Disavowal), the second linked to the suppression of affect (cross-referencing Repression). By granting affect the status of signifier, Lacan effectively refuses the classical Freudian partition that keeps affect on the economic/somatic side and representation on the symbolic side, repositioning affect within the same logical space as the Drive's representative (Vorstellungsrepräsentanz).
The concept extends and specifies several canonical coordinates simultaneously. Relative to Drive, it reframes what happens when instinct is subordinated to language: not only is a representative installed, but an affective-semantic residue is produced that itself functions as signifier. Relative to Anxiety, affect-as-signifier provides the broader categorical frame within which anxiety's singularity — as the affect that is "not without an object" (objet petit a) — becomes legible: anxiety is the privileged affect precisely because it is the one that most directly signals the Real pressing through the symbolic skin, but it can play this signal function only insofar as affect is already, structurally, a form of signification. Relative to Objet petit a, the concept sits in a parallel position: just as objet a is the remainder the symbolic cannot re-absorb from the Real, affect-as-signifier is the remainder the primary signifying chain (Vorstellungsrepräsentanz) cannot absorb from bodily inscription — and it is this remainder that acquires its own secondary semantic status. The concept thus functions as an extension of Lacan's general project of demonstrating that nothing in the subject's economy falls outside the signifier's reach, while simultaneously specifying that the signifier's domain is internally split (Entzweiung) between representative and affective poles.
Key formulations
Seminar XIII · The Object of Psychoanalysis (p.37)
I believe that there is an interest in considering affect as an original semantic form alongside the primary semantides... it would function then in a secondary position which would allow it to acquire the status of a secondary semantide of a different nature to that of the representative
The phrase "original semantic form" is theoretically loaded because it simultaneously grants affect autonomous signifying status (it is not derivative noise but a form of meaning) while the qualifier "secondary semantide of a different nature" preserves the structural asymmetry between affect and the primary drive-representative — the Entzweiung within the signifier is thus built directly into the formulation: two semantide-types, neither reducible to the other, cohabiting the same signifying order.

Theoretical move: The passage argues that affect, like the representative of the drive, must be re-categorised as a form of signifier — demonstrated by Freud's progressive specification of Verleugnung alongside Verdrängung — and that this re-categorisation reveals a reduplicated non-identity (Entzweiung) at the heart of the signifier itself, which the Lacanian formula of the signifier representing a subject for another signifier must be extended to accommodate.

Theoretical move: The passage argues that affect must be granted the status of a signifier — on a par with the drive-representative (Vorstellungsrepräsentanz) — by tracing Freud's progressive distinction between Verleugnung (denial, bearing on perception) and Verdrängung (repression, bearing on affect), and then proposes that the signifier itself be redefined to include both registers, thereby grounding a reduplicated Entzweiung (splitting) at the heart of the subject.
